Any info on Mammoth area?

Looking for any info that you are willing to share on riding in the Mammoth Area. We always ride UT,ID,WY but have sleds in Las Vegas for a little while and would love to check out the Mammoth scene.

Any input on where you can/cannot ride? Best places to unload? Anything we should know to stay out of trouble with Forest Service, landowners, etc.?

Assume you buy over the counter riding permits for CA?

How about snow conditions?

The few times I've been down there we unloaded at the east entrance of Sonora pass next to a Marine training center. Every time there has been a ranger checking registration, there was also a log in book that was mandatory to sign in. Not sure what areas are off limits found some info here.
