Does anyone know of an avalanche safety class here in the Flathead Valley? I just picked up a new beacon and would like to take a class with it. Thanks! :D

I've heard rumors of one coming up, its going to be run by someone new, thanks god! Last year they held one at the Summit in Kalispell and I fell asleep a half hour into it, learned nothing! We need a good class!

i know they have them at the summit, and last winter i saw some on snow training at the summit of Big mountain, they were digging pits and stuff, just have to play it by ear.

You fell asleep at the Level 1 course?? I guess I must really be a snow geek because I take everything I can every year, plus have a bunch of books (big books) on avy stuff that I enjoy reading. :o

If you check Glacier Country Avalanche Website (GCAC), it lists the classes planned at this time. There is usually more added, so keep checking back at the site. They also post the avy reports on there, starting the first Friday of December. 3rd week of December they post the reports twice a week, Tuesday's and Friday's. :)

We typically have one with our club at some point as well. No date on it yet, but I'm sure it's something we'll do.

Penco Yamaha in Kalispell - Next Tuesday 12-11-07 8-9pm - Be There!! U may need to find me some day...

It'll be good to see you there. This is after our club's meeting, and is really only a refresher type course (very basic). It's better than nothing though, and I do hope to see a good turnout. :)

There will be a Level 1 snowmobiler based course (first time with a snowmobile specific course) at the Summit in Kalispell. It will be 4 nights of classes (Tuesdays & Thursdays ~ 6:30 - 9:30), and 2 Sundays.

Classroom dates are: January 29, 31 ~ February 5, 7. The field course dates are February 3, 10.

Starts tomorrow

The Level 1 Snowmobile Avy Course starts tomorrow night. Attending at least some of it is better than none if you can't make all dates. Hope to see you there. :)

Field Course for the Level 1 Snowmobile Avy class is to be held at Kimmerly Basin. Meet at Canyon Creek parking lot. Be ready to ride by 9:30 Sunday morn....at the groomer shed.

I believe next Sunday's will be the same time. If any different, I will post back here.

This Sunday we will be doing some evaluating along the way on the ride in, then snowpits at Kimmerly. The following Sunday we will re-visit snowpits to see the change in the snowpack for the past week, as well as Beacon searching, and probing.

There were 19 sledders there last night, for the first of the 4 classroom days. Kudos to those that did come. :)

It is FREE!

Avy class is cancelled for tonight (just got a phone call). Sunday is still on, and then classroom time resumes on Tuesday.

Sunday field day cancelled

Sunday's field session for the Level 1 course are cancelled......due to avy danger.

Everyone please be safe if you ride this week-end.

Avy course to be re-scheduled

I received this email from Stan this morning:

Group,

In light of the poor start we got on the first Avalanche Safety for
Snowmobilers session last Tuesday, the cancellation of Thursday's program
because of my wrenched back, then the cancellation of today's field session
because of the avalanche conditions and my continued gimpiness, I'm going
to cancel the entire course for now. So we will not meet at the Summit
Health and Fitness Center this Tuesday and Thursday, nor have a field
session next Sunday, Feb 10.

Once I get back on my feet we will reschedule the whole program anew from
start to finish, probably towards the end of February. I will send out new
media announcements, will post the new schedule on the GCAC website (
www.glacieravalanche.org), will send those for which I have addresses an
email announcement, and telephone the few that aren't connected to the web.

I apologize for the inconvenience and hope that all will stay with the
program. To try to push forward with the original schedule and salvage
what time we had left doesn't meet the level of professionalism I would
accept.

Thanks for your understanding and again I apologize for all the
inconvenience.- - - - -Stan
