Got a few questions about getting an old truck of mine painted. Has already been repainted before about 8 years ago....now after some hard use and abuse I am ready to restore this thing. My question is, it already has two paint jobs on it. just roughed up the original coat when it was re-painted the first time. So can I do that again or would it be better to blast it down to bare metal? also what kind of price am i looking at to have a shop spray this for me? it is totaly taken apart....no trim, lights, glass, etc. not looking for show quality just a good looking factory type paint job. Don't want to break the bank though.

its up to you. repaint it or grind it to metal then primer to cover all metal then paint it.
if you want to repaint it, you to have to sand the shinny off then paint it.
i was in college two years ago and found out that car has 11 paints on it!
do you want different color or same color? if u want same color, you can bluff or polish it to make look shinny, thats it.

been in the bus. about 16yrs. after 2 repaints i would strip it, to much mill thickness and u will run into problems.
you might have a hard time getting a shop to just spray it.
I know when i paint somthin i like to know the prep was done how i want it. Hard to stand behind it otherwise.
Dont know if this helped.... just my .02

Sent you a PM

Yup strip it and re-prime. I would suggest getting it soda blasted thought grinding and sand blasting produce a lot of heat and can warp the panels giving you a nice wavy paint job. The soda blasting is done with baking soda basically and doesnt make as much heat but it wont take rust off just paint.

Am a bodyshop mgr. been in bus...to long.

STRIP IT.

Paint gets past certain mill levels and all sorts of problems created. Not to mention the paint on top will ONLY ever be as good as whats underneath. ie enamels crows feet etc.

As for spraying it as stated I wont allow our shop to spray a ready-prepped truck. I have done it in past and sure enough inevitably someone will ask "where did you have that painted at?" and when they say my shop its my name all over it and nobody knows the true story. With that said believe it or not if you do a good prep job take it to Maaco they will do a nice job for the money.
