Any AMC/older jeep guys on here?

So I bought a 1982 Jeep J-20 as a project truck/time killer. Its got the not-so mighty AMC 360 with a 727 3spd behind it at the moment. I'm just wondering is there any specific things to watch out for with these engines? I've got a few issues to clear up with it at the moment i.e. figure out why it barely cranks over even with a fresh battery, probably junk cables.

Thanks guys

im not much of a fan of the amc engines. some guys are die-hards, but depending on your plans for the jeep there are waaay better powerplants available.

If your exhaust is bad (y-pipe, headers) plan on redoing everything including the heads. I had a 79 J20, broke the bolts in the y-pipe, broke the bolts for the air injection, and then broke the bolts for the headers.

Old man thought I was using the impact too hard with them. Told him, "Lets see you do it." Snap, snap, two more broke off!

Anyways, just keep that in mind. This was a vehicle from the midwest, so your results will be different. They make carb / intake / header kits, so that might be something to look at depending on what is going on.

Does this have the quadratrac transfer case? Make sure it is operational with the vacuum system to lock the driveshafts together. Basically you have full time, part time high, and part time low, with the transfer case.

I used mine for plowing and it was awesome. Sold it for 500 bucks as it was turning into a rust bucket. Old man bought a new F350 shortly afterword.. bastard..lol

bad starter, timing advanced, poor ground?

The starter was supposedly replaced this year but I don't think it was anything quality, I could be wrong. I'm going to redo the ground and feed cables when I go on days off next.

The exhaust was redone a while ago since it has true duals and cut off just before the mufflers. I put on some magna flow mufflers so I don't get a ticket and I keep my hearing.

I'm pretty sure I saw on the tcase, NP203 but I could be wrong.

At the moment I just want to tune it up and get it running good, not looking to dump tons of money into it.

You my friend know nothing of amc engines then, the 401 is probly the best small block ever made period! If I remember correctly they own the record for the fastest N/A small block. Ive got an amc hornet with a 401 bored out to 426 and it runs 9s and pulls 3-5ft wheelies off the line. The 360 is a solid motor with lots of potential! With lots of aftermarket parts for cheap

I dont dispute their quality or performance, just not a fan. IMO. For my application i went with a 5.3 LM7. Lot of work involved, but for my specific needs it worked out well.

3-5' wheelstands off the line in a hornet is cool as hell though!!!

The only thing that grinds my gears about AMC is they used parts from all the big 3 so you could have 2 different trans rear end combos with the same motor! So that can be a real crap shoot sometimes! I'm just a huge fan cause nobody else is, it's always ford/chevy/dodge! Plus I like the looks I get when I blow there doors off and there like what the heck is that thing hahaha
