Anti-"Jake Brake" laws

More & more cities are enacting laws preventing the use of dynamic braking around their cities.

These laws are a joke!
Are they enforced anywhere?
Our city has the signs posted & you still hear them being used.
I would be ashamed if our cops enforced such a stupid law.
How uptight does one have to be to not want to hear a jake brake?

Your thoughts?

if i lived next to a highway i would not mind them as long as it was not the middle of the night. if half the people knew how much they save brakes they wouldn't ***** as much. but there are people who also abuse their jakes.

ive always thought they were a dumb law but from what i can see noone has been pulled over yet that i know of. in our county we dont have town cops just county deputies and they cant do anything about enforcing city ordinances anyway

I find them aggravating when there's a lot of them

Up until about 2 months ago, 300+ semis a day were coming off of Hwy 2 and going through town on their way to the Cargill plant. To explain why it is so aggraving, here's the scenario when they pull into our town. They have already slowed down to take the curved exit to the overpass that you take to take get onto Hwy 2A which runs through the middle of town and is a shortcut to the plant. High River is flatter than pi$$ on a plate so you can see all 2 of the traffic lights where you might have to make a stop while heading west before turning northto proceed through the rest of town. Also, the speed limit is 50 KM and there is a sign that "requests" the use of engine retarders not be used.

All I can say is that with that much truck traffic using their jake brakes, it is aggraving since we only live a couple of blocks from their shortcut. And to hear those things grinding in the middle of the night was enough to make me want to go out there in my flannel pj's and fuzzy slippers and give the drivers a piece of my sleep-riddled mind:face-icon-small-blu - well that actually never happened but at 3 AM it's a thought:o.

The truck traffic has reduced since the town has approached the Cargill plant and an understanding was arrived at to encourage the semis to use and alternative route that is much safer and only adds a few more minutes onto their trip.

If people only used them when they needed them then we wouldnt have this issue. Shifting with the brake on...whats with that? Shut the thing off and use it right.

Ok...I'm done.....................

Here is the Tall and short of my take on "Jake breaks" they are very useable device they have a place. on a stock Quiet truck you can barely hear the jake work. Its the tall stack stright piped loud azz trucks are the ones who ruin it for the rest! Just like them Fuggin Harleys! Pull the loud trucks over give them a huge fine! period! stock truck qith the quiet jake will never get a second look its just like loud sleds passing thru private land it puts us all at risk

I agree...

in populated areas I agree, unless there is a grade so steep that its needed with a load. Also being a Driver myself I can also vouch for the driver of a Detroiter that its a b!tch to upshift on the lower side cause the rpm's don't drop fast enough therefore its much easier to upshift using the jake...:)
tho there is nothing worse than a straightpipe using a jake, LOUD!:(

Uh-huh... there's always two sides...

They're a tool. Often abused no doubt, but there for a reason.

WC820, I hear ya on the "quiet stock truck" almost un-noticable nowadays!

I don't obey them. Groton, wherever. When I come rolling in weighing 114,000lbs with a pup, it would take me forever to slow down without the jake. For those of you b!tching about straight pipes, you had better not ever have had a can on your sled or have done anything to your pickup exhaust. They ought to have a fine for whiners and hypocrites.

my new kw has an auto shift dose it all fore me:D and it uses the Jake to up shift out of my control but with stock pipes you berly notice it

Guess I'm in the minority. I love the sound of a straight piped truck on the jake. It's one of the reasons to go to el Rodeo du Camion in Quebec every year. Saturday nights light n sound show is awesome. Course I also like the sound of a piped sled. I can understand those who are gettin fed up with them. I was at some dudes house in Sault Ste. Marie that was right under the International bridge. All hours of the day n nite trucks jakein down the slight grade. From stock to open pipes. Some were so loud it shook the stuff off his shelves. I'm sure if I lived there it would get real old real fast.

Absolutely right. Stock exhaust, jake not loud at all. Straight pipes at 3 in the morning coming through town would piss me off also.

I use my jakes all the time, even in town BUT I keep good mufflers on the trucks. My ears are shot after many years of 16V71's ect. w/o mufflers. Loud bikes and sleds are a PITA.

I use my Jake all the time as well. Saves lots of ware and tear on the truck and brakes. I hate loud jakes so those I am against no reason for it. Also watching the lights in towns can help a ton. Some drivers need to learn to watch for the walk flashes and the amount of time it takes once they start before a red light. This can save on the amount of jaking needed as well and brakes on the truck.

When I have a pup on and am 98,000 plus it becomes a safety issue to not use the jakes on bad roads or even an empty trailer can be a handfull hit the brakes and the truck will be fine but the trailer is the first to lock up and jack-knife on some ice.

There are some places here that have signs $500.00 fine for unmuffeled exhaust brakes.....

I try to watch for these, since I run 6" straights on one truck,
And 8" straights on the other truck,,,,,Love the sound,,,
But I do watch it around populated areas,,,,

And YES,,,ALL--- My Sleds are piped.....

WHAT????sorry didn't here you,,,,,,,,,

I'm more concerned about the smoked brakes. 114k, 117k, 121k, 128k... those loads really beat the brakes. I prefer the jake over the brakes this time of year anyway. I'll take sliding drives over sliding trailers any day.

Funny that they teach in CDL school not to use the jake in inclement weather, because it's saved my bacon more than once. Just gotta know how to use it.

well instead of roastin out all my brakes I preferr to use my jake....like redneck I run a super b jagged out at around 63,000KGs most days of the week and my jake is a smooth controlled slow down...

on icy mountains I preffer my jake on 1,2 or 3 as it permits ...with a 625 Cat and stock pipes its pretty quiet..
