Another Snowies Search and Rescue

Rode out of Greenrock this morning and Sherriff and Search and Rescue were up getting ready to look for some missing sledders. They were missing last night but when we got back they were all loaded up and found. Not sure what the story was.

Where is the waterfall, French Creek? Nice motel down in there if so...

Search and rescue this last weekend was for a few guys from our group.

Our trip was scheduled for Sunday to Thursday. Four guys could not make the days so they drove down for a Friday to Sunday ride. They got north on O, and ended up getting turned around at the intersection of O and NO, Sheep lake area. Thought they would hit one last meadow when the wind and snow picked up and started to get dark. They tried finding the trail again and just made a loop back to where they were. The decided to start digging a hole and getting wood for a fire.

A friend of ours actually got a call from them while on the mountain, fortunately they carried a phone and got decent service on and off. They knew where they were just not how to get out. Search and rescue was called and an attempt was made Sat. night but called off due to wind and snow, no visibility. The friend that got the call was supposed to drive down with us Sunday, but left Sat. night to go help as he knew exactly where they were. They were found Sunday morning, all doing good.

Just a reminder how quickly things can change, and even experienced riders can get caught up. Thankful they made it through the night. They said that it was the worst thing they have ever been through, with the cold and wind.

One of the lucky ones...

I was one of the knuckelhead guys in the group of four that got stuck in the backcountry Saturday night. It was all about improper planning and just plain carelessness. We only went out for a short ride and everyone of use thought the other brought the nav gear to get out if we got side tracked. Big mistake! Everytime you go out check to make sure each of you are set to go and know your crews gear in and out.

Fortunately, we knew exactly where we were at but by the time the next day came we had so little fuel left that we could not take a chance getting off track again.

I will say that it was the longest and worst night of my life. Worst of all of our lives for that matter. We had little supplies and when you are at 10k+ elevation for 32 hours you don't think super clearly.

Moral of the story.... Make sure you always plan for the worst!

RIDE SAFE and get a pull and go. so the team is not wasteing time and if the sled breaks down yours or mine we are leaving it there !!!!

Abandoned Machines Follow-Up

One of the deputies involved in the search and rescue for the early fatality is pretty sure that these "abandoned" machines were left due to the un-planned overnight stay by two citizen rescuers (some serious frostbite involved). They should be removed soon (friends making plans, original owners are unable to complete the recovery due to injuries).
