Another SLP Pipe Failure

Inspecting sled this morning and found this, got a call into SLP to see how this will be handled. Don't think the second clamped helped!

Mine after nearly 400 miles. I made my own 2nd clamp and it has been on there since it was new. I just received the update kit today, I may put a third clamp on the next weld down just for good measure.

The harmonics of the pipe are going to be a problem no matter what clamps are on it. That's not a butt Weld that's cracking, it's an overlay to beef up the pipe sensor bung. That patch will have to be carefully tigged on a little bit bigger to deal with the harmonics. You might get away with fully wrapping the pipe center section with header wrap to help contain it. You can also see how the top picture that's cracking has a full on Weld on it, full penetration for sure. The lower picture that's not cracked has a series of basically tack welds to put it together, trying to minimize heat affected zone and potential cracking. Exhaust and pipe harmonics at 8350 or 8400 that they want to see are just killing that spot.

I suspect the crack issue is due to the type of weld[Mig]. There are methods of Tig welding that minimize just what were seeing,The old timers I worked with have expressed this cracking 10 years ago and don't mig weld for this reason. They tig, pre heat and flood the inside of the pipe with argon gas ,Stainless rod ect.

oh ya i agree that tig is superior, but time consuming. if slp tigged every pipe together they would be a grand and in limited supply. i think these x beads could be enough to help support the bung

More Pixs

SLP asked for better pictures, I sent hem these, looks like the clamps did stop it from going any farther that where they where attached.

Mine had just over 500 miles on it, 400 without the clamp update and no problems. added clamp and it cracked in 100 miles Eric

SLP is now saying that the replacement pipes are 3 to 4 weeks out, OUCH.....that is different than what was said a couple of days ago.

That could be the rest of the season for some areas. Said keep old one and-get it welded to keep it on the snow. Wish I could weld, otherwise will need to pay to have this done.
