Another reason for wearing a TekVest......

After reading the UAC's report on the last avalanche victim in the meadows near solitude.....see the full report and pics here- http://utahavalanchecenter.org/accident_meadows_1272010

I got to thinking of a secondary benefit to having a tekvest. Helmet protects your head. Tekvest may help in preventing some Thoracic trauma from rocks and smaller saplings etc. in the tumble in an avy.

Now I know that the forces likely to be sustained in a large avalanche would still be now match for this gear. You pound a rock or a mature tree and you will likely be toast anyway. But I can't help but think that it could help your chances to survive the impacts and trauma in order to still be alive when found.

Thoughts?

I'm with you on this one, you can never have enough protection from impacts to your body. I believe body protection. I have people that count on me to work for a living.

Definitley wear a vest, one of the guys riding with us last w/e cracked 3 ribs from hitting a rock and then the bars. We was not wearing one. Also, with the crazy amount of snow and high avy danger, the smartest thing is to stay off of the long steep stuff, let alone this obvious avy prone area.

Definately the more protection you have the better your chances are. We ride with chest protection, knee/shin guards, and of coarse a helmet that we replace every few years. Although there are many parts of my body that remain unprotected, the most important parts are.:face-icon-small-coo

I think it would offer some protection from the constricting effects of the settling snow?
