Another belt question

Has anyone tried or have any experience with the Napa belt? It's made by Gates so I'd say it's quality but I'd like a little feedback before I throw one on. The PN is 44X4640. List is $130, but my cost is $60 through my shop so should I give it a shot? Thanks. Sonny

Gates belt

You can buy the Gates belt from mfgsupply.com for $60 so you're not getting the screaming deal you think you are. I've been running this belt for about 100 miles and it's been great. There was a nice post about it a few weeks ago in the IQ forum, if I remember right. This is a single cog belt with Kevlar, almost as wide as the 1115 although sold as a 1080 width.

I wasn't sayin it was a screamin deal. I was just comparing list to cost and was wondering why it's so much cheaper than even the Dayco belts, not to mention the Pol belts. So you like it so far? Worth the 60 to give it a shot?

They are a good belt up to the point they blow. If/when they go, they tend to not give you the warning signs of the Polaris belts....pitching a string, stinking hot etc.....they just explode violently! I have seen a couple cranks lost because of the sudden shock/over-rev of the belt blowing on a climb. Worth a shot for the price, but this is something to be aware of. May also need a little tweeking of pin weight or helix to work properly as they are a different compound. :beer;

I agree with winterbrew..... IMHO I would not chance a cheaper (inferior quality) belt.
If it blows and then you need a new crank it's not worth it.

Good Points

These guys bring up some good points. I'm not sure that it being Kevlar will keep it from exploding or not. I'm also on the 755 not the 866 so I'm not generating quite as much torque as you will. I still feel its a great belt for the price. Let us know what you decide.

Well this will be the first belt on the new crank and top end so we shall see. From what I understand any belt you run has the possibility of explosion so why not give it a shot. I've heard alot of good things about this belt, but I will definetely keep winter brew's advice in mind. The ol 9 has SLP's perf package including ported jugs so this should be a good test if nothing else, I'll let ya know.
