Amazing XLT Engine

My brother is running a 96 XLT SLP modded bigbore 680 engine in a Miata race car, in Lemons racing. (Google it.) They actually have a couple cool write-ups on online. Last weekend was a 14.5 hour race, they clocked the car at 101mph at one point. 2.5 hours into the race, they broke a rod on the mag side. But it still ran fine, they still made 80 mph on two cylinders and the engine ran for the rest of the 12 hours, on two!
Anybody want to buy a lightly used XLT engine? :)

Yep, lol. About 1000 pounds lighter than a stock Miata racer, he said that until they lost the rod, they were looking at 2:05 laptimes. The fastest lap of the race was 2:07. On the dyno, 86 horse to the rear wheels. They did all the tuning on the dyno, using my Digitrons that I sold to him, got a good baseline for 1250 on the EGT and then tuned to EGT temps on the track.
They are looking for an 800 XCR triple to drop in for the rest of the year, then over the winter look for something else, a big EFI twin or big triple.
He told me that before they lost the rod, it would spin the tires coming out of slow corners. :)

A turbo 800 would be cool, but hard to pull off. The "spirit" of the series is to keep costs under 500 for the car, minus tuning stuff and safety stuff like cages. Hypothetically, I could buy a turbo sled, part it out, and be into the engine for next to nothing, but that would probably be pushing it, lol.

Very cool. Now I'm thinking of one of those sick triples from the day. I can see merit in this type of car racing. Good times. 550iq

Very cool!!
As for the motor tho it won't be big hp it will be the reliability to go the distance, I have seen a bunch of guys do the cat 1000 triples in track cars around the same weight and have clocked 117mph, and from reading the post it was a stock motor with some aftermarket pipes but said it was reliable as hell. But if they were to go EFI I would start with a F7 base with an 03 or 06 flash, very easy to go from 140hp to well over 200 and the motors are super strong and if you really wanted to you could add a starter and hook up common start like they use to (still have a few buddys with sabercats with command) back in 04 when they came out with them, the only thing is the motors like to drink oil but mixing is an option and don't seem to slow down the EFI system and its also a very simple system to. Now my gears are moving, The rotary motor is another option very strong power plant and very cheap to pick up a 670 now a days as i just picked one up for a $150 shipped complete and running and all I did was re gasket it and match my ports and openings for better flow.

Well, it is getting an 02 Mountain Max engine with triples. Have the sled here, it will be his team's project for the winter. I think the XLT with triples/porting/680 bigblock was getting 120 horse? I think he said 87 to the wheels on the dyno. And over 100 on the speedo. The piped Yamaha with some head work should pull 140 or so, and be more reliable.
Funny thing, he told me yesterday that they put 2500 miles on that engine in two races!
