Heading to alpine/jackson this coming week jan 13-18th. Lots of snow. Should be good. We come from Tahoe and are good skiers and pretty good sledders. Great BC awarness(most of time) with all the avy gear. Never have been sledding in Alpine but heard its real good.
We got 4 mt sleds heading up into the unknown wednesday. Anybody going to Alpine area who knows the area and needs some riding buddies?
Or advice on areas to go to that might be good sled/ski zones?
Thanks

Nice timing on the trip. Snow will be excellent this week, and the weather for that matter. As far as areas it's a pretty fail proof area. Get a map and don't be afraid to explore. Contact Rob Hoff for that sled skiing stuff. I think he could direct you since he seems to do it as we'll. post up some pics for those of us desk humping this week. :face-icon-small-coo

Thanks for the response. Our plan A is to ride up the Greys river road and check out the terrain as we go in. Maybe go up one of the more mellow drainages closer and feel out the snow. Getting a map is on the list. Any other advice? . I'll try rob hoff but I'm sure he will be busy going big somewhere else. Thanks

IMO you are pretty nuts to be heading for big terrain this week. stick to the trees and low angle slopes. Given the size of slides that have been occurring

Head up greys river, hang a right at the first bridge you come to. that should get you up where you want to be, but please be smart.

We are on our way. Looking at the avy cycle around the area we will def be looking for some low angle trees and playing it safe. Hope to meet some riders when we get there on Wednesday and watching what is sliding. Prob some major wind loading. Thanks for any info.

Anything and everything can slide right now...Saw a lot of fractures and small slides on very mediocre terrain over the weekend. . A rider was fully buried up Philips canyon, which is a big ski/sled spot on Teton Pass..where he was was absolutely ridiculous, and they should never have been on that slope in the first place, but unfortunately not everyone makes smart decisions when conditions are like this. . I was way up the greys on saturday, all the way to Blind Bull.. Got into some incredibly deep stuff but everything down low is still sagebrush poking through. There was heavy Moisture saturday morning with warm weather that had it raining on the low stuff, we had to ride 30 miles to get to the snow. . Definitely be safe right now, anything and everything is ready to slide with the winds we are having. Was blowing heavy and hard again all day today.

That's a sobering post. It seems very dangerous right now. Do u guide in the alpine/Jackson area.? We have talked about hiring a guide and it seems like a pretty good idea considering the conditions. I have talked with LCC on the phone but haven't committed to anyone yet. We're gonna ski JH 2 Moro and hope to get a better idea of what the trend is. I'll be the first one to admit given the high avy danger and the complex terrain it might be above our skill set given of lack of local knowledge . A cry for help one could call it.

You can head up Grays and find days worth of riding away from all the danger areas. Spend all weekend just south of that area and found very nasty layers all over from the new snow/rain and warm weather cycle. Some snow around 8500 had a very crusty layer (rain/freeze cycle) just under 4-5" of snow, and there were visible weak layers after about 12-15" of new powder up higher. Several of our tracks just playing off the side of the trail were letting small slabs loose. Incredible amount of new snow fell Saturday night and probably Sunday after we left. Lots of wind will make things sketchier as well. Don't hesitate to get out and ride that area, but definitely practice constant monitoring of the terrain you are in or approaching. You can be in some spots before you know it up there that could spell trouble. Tons of trees and other terrain that should be ripe for the taking from the latest storm though, so have fun.

Got some good riding in yesterday. There where areas of cold deep snow and areas of variable pow with a crust buried under new snow. We saw some natural and sled triggered slides. The natural was prob class 2+ but in very steep terrain. Didn't see too much we could sled ski. But def fun ripping on the machines. Big country out here it's awesome! We're gonna head up Greys river road father today I think.

I think we met you today Tahoepow at the box y? The snow is settling. We had a good day. We stayed off the big stuff and rode in the tree's.

I think so. You guys have XM's? Did we see u the next day south of alpine in the small parking lot? Those creeks were interesting but the riding was off the hook. Sidehilling for miles it was def hero snow. Racked up 300 miles in 4 days. Lots were trail getting out to those higher zones. Great time. I'll post a few pics when I get back home. Sad to go but made it out one one piece and got some skiing in too.

Too funny. That was us. We saw your ski tracks on that hill you guys were on as we went out. Pretty crazy looking. I saw one of your buddy at breakfast at the Flying Saddle and asked him if it was you guys posting on SW. He "no whatever your talking about I don't post anything" lol.

Hey Guys, Myself and some others just got home from Alpine and we all came out from the tahoe area. We stayed at the flying saddle fri,sat and sunday night. We rode out of Bedford and strawberry. The riding was fantastic and the hospitality was great. Ate breakfast at Yankee Doodle cafe and drank beers at the Flying Saddle Bar where we watched the seahawks/Niners game sunday night with ALOT of Seahawks fans LOL. Anyways shoutout to all the locals we met as they were very cool and accommodating to alot of out-of-towners from California. Can't wait to go back!!
