All ye old MM owners I need RPM advice

:confused:Just wondering how fast you can safely spin these tripples? Am bouncing between 8800 and 9100 rpm with SLP pipes depending on temp altitude etc. Was running at 8700 to 8900 as reccommended by SLP but lightened up primary and definetly improvement at the higher RPM. Plus heard from a few people that the tach is usually 1-200 rpm high that what engine is actually spinning. Will try with a timing light to compare rpm's but just looking for words of wisdom.

I ran Hauck pipes on mine, back in the day. I think those were 9100 rpm pipes. Never had a crank/engine problem (that wasn't my fault). :face-icon-small-ton

my 2002 mm has slp port/polish kit and pipes of course with bored carbs since day one. 9100/9200 rpm all day long. 18000kms no failure finally did pistons/rings and pins just because. my kid still rides the piss out of it.

Maxx99, my mm is a 2000 750 cc with slp pipes. For set up they told me 8700 on a hill 9000 on flat. It sounds like what your running is good to go.

With SLP pipes, you will lose power spinning past 8700 RPM,SLP pipes have have excellent torque back up,meaning the peak torque peaks at almost the same RPM as the HP and it's quite high (for a 700 triple )So don't think that spinning this engine faster will make more power,,,it won't.There is a bit more power to be found by pulling the center shim out of the head gasket and installing reed spacers.

Think I am in the ball park but may weight up slightly for giggles and see what happens. Glad to see that these little engines can take those rpm's and still last. I agree with you Linc on the RPM range for torque but I do not think my tach is that accurate so will confirm that first. Local yamaha dealer mentioned that these tachs are common for couple hundred rpm high so figure would ask if anyone had seen this. I do pull 9100 on the flat and slightly less on a long hill.(spend more time looking at what not run into than looking at the tach but the few times have been slightly below 9000). Have done the head shim removal with reed spacers and v-force 3 reeds. Got a roller secondary working pretty good and pulls pretty hard so the grin factor has gone way up.

Thx again for the replies
