alaskan cruise advice

I did an Alaskan Cruise 2 summers ago, great time! Only tips I would have are pack rain gear, clothes suitable for lower to mid 60 degree weather. I thought I had enough clothes packed for that type of weather but I didn’t. I would also recommend taking a bush plane tour, that was a lot of fun. If you contact them directly rather than going through the cruise line you will save some money, however they won’t wait for you if you’re late since it would not be a “guaranteed” excursion. I also did a canopy zip line thing in Ketchikan I believe, that was a lot of fun as well.

We did the Norwegian cruise into Glacier Bay two summers ago. It was pretty cool. I wish we could have gone for two weeks instead of just one but it was definitely worth it. Ditto on the clothes, I didn't need rain gear but I didn't have enough warm clothes. It was in the high 50s to mid 60s while we were there. We went at the end of July.
I also reccomend the zip line, it was awesome!

anyone been on an alaskan cruise? we are going the end of june. we wanted to try to make it up to denali but don't know if we will have time.
any good advice?

This looks like the year to come up and visit us up here ;);) so far this year we had more nice days (60+) than the last 2 years together :D now its blue Sky's and +65

Southeast is nice, but be prepared for cold and rain. Last year out of 90 days, July, Aug, Sep, it RAINED over 80 of them. Wet, cold, soggy rain. This year though so far, has been nice.

Actually just got down from riding on the hill about an hour ago. Still 7-8 feet @1200' elev.

Icefield tours are nice (riding them is even better), but not offered. Private charters are cheaper especially if you have a group. Dont go on them unless it is sunny or its a waste of money. End of june? Fishin is excellent also.

No matter what you do or the weather, you will enjoy it.

If time is tight for you, I would skip the train ride up to Denali and back. It is pretty don't get me wrong, but it is pretty boring. The scenery that you will on the cruise is incredable. The train ride to to Denali will pale imo. It is just another mtn once you get there. Spend your time up on this end on the Kenai Penninsula closer to port. There are many many options to be had here as day trips. I would much rather do 2-3 days trips around here than go up to Denali and back. I think you would as well. Enjoy your trip and bring QUALITY raingear, and layers. We live in goretex and polarfleece. Weather will change and you will be in shorts and no shirt, and then back in the polarpleece and goretex again later.

won't have time for fishing...
we are stopping in ketchikan, juneau, & skagway. i've been told the red onion saloon is a good place to go... would also like to see the glaciers from a helicopter.

Ketchikan=Lots of Rain and some Wind
Juneau=Rain, With some wind
Skagway = Rain with lots of wind

Glacier flights are the bomb, So long as you have sun. If it is socked in, it's a waste of time.

When heading into Juneau, Right before getting into town (the last 6-8 miles) you will see mountains on the left. Those are our riding areas, along with everything north on the same island.

Red Onion, Red Dog, Both lame IMO, but you may like them. Ketchikan is a drinking town, as is Juneau, However, you will find your share of vagrants and bums. Imperial is a decent place in Juneau and the Sourdough in Ketch. Skagway, you dont have much of a choice.
Here about 2 mountains south of where you will dock are some of my tracks from last week. Its not much, but excellent riding.

We went last June. That area is actually considered rain forest area. We did the zipline in Ketchikan, it was awesome! Juneau took a bush plane to the historic Taku Lodge for a salmon bake, and we flew over all of the glaciers. At the lodge you are sitting in front of the Taku Glacier. You probably won't have time to make it to Denali. We also did some sea kayaking and did see whales. This trip was so amazing we want to go again next year. I am hooked on cruises now. Also, we had the unlimited alcohol option:beer;:beer; and we had what we wanted. We drank way too much! I think I put on 10 lbs because food was awesome and drank too much. What cruise line are you going on?? Are you stopping at the Hubbard glacier??
