Airbox shelf, opinions, truth

well I was talking with a buddy today he has stage 3 slp and i was thinking about doing the bikeman kit.
we were talking and he said slp recommends leaving shelf, horns in airbox as it messes with things yet they add 2 flowrites or the extra air intake. doesnt make alot of sense to me as you can see the intake supplies more than enough for the 2 horns in box.
I talked to bikeman and they recommend pulling the shelf as its worth 3hp and works for them.
maybe its a difference of maps between slp and bikeman. i will compare after christmas as i have both.
Any of you other tuning gurus able to shed some light on this.
 
removing the horns can mess with air flow. The horns are capable of handling more air. So when you add an intake or flow rites you are getting more air to the horns. Expecially when the intakes start to cover with snow.
 
The air horns act as velocity stacks and increase the velocity of the air going through them while directing the air and a smoother air flow into your throttle bodies. They were designed to be there I'd leave them
 
x2, those things are tested and tested again on computer models and on the dyno for tuned flow/hp leave them be..
 
Leave them. Polaris has a "feature" in it's program that has never been, and will likely never be discussed in this or any other forum. It is not able to be seen through digital wrench, and has been in the ECU since the 900 motor in 2005. They have found different ways of masking it, and with correct fuel maps, most of you will never see it, but it is there. The flashing DET light on the Dragons, the mid range bog in the long stroke 700 and 900 motors, were much deeper rooted problems than most people know. Changes in airflow are the most likely to bring the issue to light. Silencers, pipes, and high flow intakes seem to be the greatest triggers, and the fuel controllers, if setup correctly, do a good job of covering it up. For the naysayers out there that will read this, I spent an entire day in Roseau on Polaris' dime having this explained to me by the engineers. Leave them in.
 
Opened, pandora's box it is. Tough to tease the masses here, you can't talk because you have a non-dis, Poo will know who you really are, or ?
 
No no-dis, just a very long explanation and about 6 months of time with a customers sled. Was told by mfg of Polaris electronics that what was happening was impossible, even though a half dozen of us saw the issue. Had to show them the issue since they couldn't replicate at their facility with their best test rider. We understand the issue and the fact that it is there to protect the motor, but there has to be a better way. The 2cfi motor will not see it as rapidly as the 4cfi did, but it is still there.
