Aero 53 Question

Anyone know of any reason why an Aero 53 would have to be mounted upright.

Could I turn it slightly... say on about a 33 degree angle? I am wondering because of it being self lubricating, and my desire to do some changes that would be different from the kit that OVS supplied with it, which keeps it vertically mounted.

Your thoughts appreciated !

Yes. Its because of the lubrication system.

Take off the top cap and you will see.
You can put the turbo the way you want but need to change the position of the wick so you get lubrication.

Might want to explain how you know if your wicks are still in the oil.

The wicks simply draw oil up unto the bearings, so the end of the wicks must remain submerged. Here is an example photo using a 53-series Aerocharger:

The oil level (indicated in red) should be substantially higher than the end of the wicks on the bottom. Just be sure that your wicks are still as close to the bottom of the compressor as possible and you'll be fine.

I have an older 53 and want to make sure it is installed right. If the charge tube is facing up like in the picture will i be ok ? I have never had it apart and dont know where to find the wicks.

Also where can i find oil for them ? This unit has been sitting for a few years , i want to make sure it is full of oil before i use it. Thanks for your help.

Correct the oil is specially engineered for our high-speed bearings by Mobile Synthetics and distributed by us. It's usually $9 a bottle (one bottle for 53's, two for 66's) but if you send us pictures of your Aerocharger application and a brief statement about it we send you oil for free.

Thanks alot , i will snap a few pictures in the morning when i make it to the shop. Can i just email it to your email address you have listed ? Or is there another place i need to send it ? Snail Mail?
