Adding new connection for electric helmet visor??

03 mostly stock SD Summit 600 HO.

Bought a couple of the new SD helmets @ a shop in Denver for xmas (one for the wife), but the sled doesn't have the plug in.

Helmets come w/ the long connection cord and also a shorter section (female) w/ 2 connections (red/black) w/ copper circles on the ends.

?s ...

1. can (easily) I connect these "as is" somewhere in the battery/electric system (12v)
2. if not, i've found 2 kits from Ski-Doo online - one is a 12v accessory plug kit (for GPS, MP3, etc.) and the other is the "electric visor connection kit" - both are cheap (about $30), and I'd prefer to DIY vs. paying the $80/hr shop time if this isn't too complicated.

TIA if anyone has suggestions.

Piece of cake

The female side with the copper loops will go to a battery. (If your sled is equipped with one) Red to pos black to neg. run the harness to the bar risers or somewhere else if you prefer. I would recommend also adding a fuse to the pos side.

thx

OK, now how do I figure out where the battery is located on the sled (03 SD Summit 600) and where specifically would I add the fuse (size?) to the positive side (know the fuse box - but does it matter which slot?)

Appreciate the reply - rode yesterday w/ the helmet w/o the plug in and it was ***ly (frost wise) even w/ the breath deflector.

TIA.

If you have an e start theres a battery, if you dont have the estart then there is no battery. Your visor may run from ac power, find a hot wire with a test light
Make sure its a good size wire 18 ga. is fine. There may be an unused plug on your sled somewhere. Taping into the headlight wiring is also an option.

hmmmmmm

OK, thx. No wonder I couldn't find the battery (no E start).

Could I use tie-downs or bungee cords and strap a 12v battery somewhere close to the steering column (i.e. by the tool kit holder - over and to the side of the metal clutch cover)?

run the cable down through that column and connect to the (new) battery?

that seems like the least painful option if the only drawback is the 2 lbs added by the 12v battery.

You don't need a battery to hook up your electric shield. Just look for any unused accessory plugs near the steering column, fire up the sled and check them with a test light/volt meter. Any unused accessory plug that is not being used will work just fine. Tap the red of the electric shield harness into a + lead and tap the black into a - lead or a good chassis ground. Route the female plug up the column towards your bar pad and zip-tie it to the bars on the left side ... secure it well and make sure it doesn't bind up anywhere in the steering. Just remember to secure it tight to the bars so that it will allow the male end of the long cord to release if you get bucked off your sleds. I used to run my cord through my sleeve so it wasn't flopping around while boondocking and it was easy to release when I had a get-off. GL with the install ... it's really very simple. ;)
