ABS Wireless Activation

The ABS wireless activation units have now made it into the United States & Canada. While I think these are more applicable to Heli-Ski operations, I can see some situations where they would be beneficial to snowmobilers.

The Wireless activation unit allows you to trigger the avalanche airbag of another rider in the case they are disable and cannot trigger their airbag on their own.

There are several configurations for the Wireless unit. With this unit, you can:
* Equal activation alliance – everybody can activate everybody else’s airbag.
* Defined activators – appointed persons, the guide for example, can initiate the remote activation.
* Single activation – only one particular person’s airbag can be activated (example: only one person is skiing on the slope)
* you can always activate your own airbag.

These are some of the latest technology available in the United States.

Nice option. Are there slave units available that only receive signals and deploy the bag of the wearer?

You can configure each wireless unit to be either a slave or a master. If one airbag is the master and three airbags are each configured as slaves, when the master is deployed then all slaves are deployed and act as a relay/repeater to each other to increase the distance that they will reach.

Hopefully that info helps.

Sure, that's clear thanks. Was wondering if there were "dedicated" slave units available at a fraction of the price of the Master. It doesn't sound like that's case. Regardless, it's a great option to be considered.

A couple of thoughts...

I wonder how easy they will be to operate and not foul up in a high stress situation? It seems like there are a lot of options to choose from in a split second decision.

Can you shut it off to do a beacon search?

Could be a very useful tool and save lives. Good to see progression.

This is an awesome option..................

A system like this may have prevented a death here last year. I was involved in the recovery of a fellow who was wearing all the gear, but didn't see the hill let go behind him after he turned out and was coming back down. The slide overtook him and he never got a chance to pull the handle on his pack and there was some of his fellow riders watching that were wearing packs.

This is the perfect example of how great a system like this could be.
