ABS Trigger Handle.

I have now lost 2 trigger handles from my ABS pack. The first time, I assumed that I had failed to connect it properly. I was disconnecting the handle after each use and reconnecting it before riding in order to avoid an unintentional detonation in the car etc.. I got a new handle, attached it to the pack and made sure it was securely connected. I then decided to just leave it connected all the time. To my surprise, after about a dozen rides, the new handle is gone. I noticed that it was missing at the beginning of my ride and assume that it fell off while on the previous ride.

Has anybody else had this problem?

it is a quick release! maybe try taping the release sleave? i always remove it and only put it on after its on my back. i may have to carry tape now thanks for the heads up! funny storys about guys and the packs, one pulled his in the hotel room fiddleing around with it and another buddy figures it was frozen and same results DUH!

Definitely use the silicon lubricant to keep the quick release functioning properly, otherwise it may stick when you are trying to remove the handle and cause it to deploy.

pretty sure thats what happened to me. mine blew up in my face last night.

I have lost mine too but it is white and hard to see when you drop it in the snow. The second one I purchased, I coated it in blue elastic tape so it is easier to see if dropped on the snow.

I was crossing a section in Whistler known as Avalanche Alley and went to undo mt velcro latch and noticed it was gone.

Trigger

Hi guys,
I will try and give you some tips to try and help anyone from loosing their trigger. The best thing to do is remove your trigger after every ride. When you pull back on the quick coupler the trigger should pop out into your had. If it doesn't then it needs to be siliconed. To make sure it is locked in you have to watch the quick coupler come back over the steel snap ring, that is how you tell it is locked in. You should never pull the trigger to check it.
If you leave it in all the time, it will blow of the bags when you try and take it out.

Hope this helps.

I have left mine in and mositure caused it to rust. by the time I got it out I had to set off the bags.

Thanks for the heads up, i guess this shows that maintenance is more than a 10 letter word and goes for our safety gear as well as our sled's.
I carry and extra handle and canister with me all the time and use the silicone lubricant on the handles.
Just my 2 cents.

Resurrecting this old thread, as I too am now having this issue; I disconnect the handle after each use and have kept up with lubing. Occasionally the handle is no longer in the collet and falls out when I loosen the Velcro strap. Do these collets wear out over time? Bad handle?... Not trusting this thing anymore. Thanks

Same deal,
Put my handle on when entering riding area. Looked down five minutes later and it was gone. Rode the whole week without a t handle. Kind of the ****s.

The biggest issue we see is when people put the handle into the quick connect fitting they push the handle in but don't actually hear the "click" to ensure it is seated in the fitting the right way.
If you don't keep the fitting lubed, then it makes it more difficult for it to "click" into place.

I hear the words and appreciate the feedback, however in my case the handle is fully seated. As a matter of fact, I go out of my to ensure that the outer sleeve returns to the home position. I also gently pull on the handle. Trust me, it's seated before I head out. Again, the unit is routinely lubed. Thanks

How much of this is due to the handles being recycled, also? In the end, they are a wear item, and will only withstand so many connects/disconnects, regardless of lube. Dunno if the specs are checked at recycle time, or if they even exist. I would guess function is confirmed, but don't know if any science is applied.

I do own an ABS, and haven't had a problem with mine coming off unintended, but silicone is a must if you use it often - they will get sticky and hard to connect/disconnect. ABS dealers, Narona, feel free to comment, no flame intended.

I replaced my handle (thanks Narona). The problem still persists. The sleeve and inner are both lubed routinely. I now suspect that the fabric stitching on the handle cover may be grabbing the collet sleeve at times, when things are bouncing around. In any case, I check it often...

I've something similar to this happen with the ABS NorthFace Vest. It does not have the hand guard that the backpack version has. Several times when reaching for the trigger we have bumped the quick disconnect collar and released the trigger handle. This was in pre-use equipment checks when we were trying to deploy the system. It should be noted that we do bump the handle from the bottom after insertion to ensure the coupler has seated, as recommended by the manufacturer.

jgd,
maybe you could try a different guard for the coupler to further narrow your issue down.

Yeah, my pre-flight checklist includes "bump the handle from the bottom after insertion to ensure the coupler has seated". I agree with doing something with the guard. I'm pursuing that. Thanks
