? about my M7 fuel pump

So last time out my sled would only run on starting fluid. Wouldn't run on its own. I think my fuel pump might be bad. I've checked the connector to the pump and it's good so there's no short there.

So should I get a whine and fuel pressure if I connect 12 volts to the pump lead? That's what I've done and I only get a slight clicking noise.....disconnect the fuel line and don't have any fuel spraying out or any pressure. Has anyone had to replace a fuel pump before? It seems like something that I don't think would go out very likely.

It's an 05 M7 with about 4k miles on it.

Thanks

Chris, first try hooking the leads up backwards for just a sec...the pump will try to run backwards. but it won't hurt it. Then try it with the correct polarity...if it works, it's all good and was just you're "smart" valves going closed. If it still doesn't seem right, look into the tank. The pump should be spilling excess fuel from the pressure regulator inside the tank, and if you are below about 1/2 tank, will see (and hear) it spilling back if it's running. If not, then yeah, you could have a bad pump.

good luck,
John

pump

I had a f7 do that at the track last year. reached in the tank played with smart valve I guess is what it is called.pulled it out of tank taped it a few times droped it back in worked rest of season. if it wont work worst thing is you have a stinky hand

Just a quick side note. Take a flash light and shine it in your tank. You may have some brass or gold colored sprinkles on the bottom of the tank. If this is the case, your pump is about to die.

I have used the reverse polarity trick several times and I have noticed that if you don't see the gold dust in the tank you will be okay for quite a bit longer, but if you do you need to get a new pump. You can get just the pump for a lot less than $300 and just use the housing and connectors from your old system.
