a little secret (maybe)

I noticed on my last ride out that I was getting snow in the side vents that I made myself from perforated aluminum sheet stock. So I decided to do the prudent thing and add some kind of flo-rite or frogskin to the vents. I was shopping with my wife for Christmas stuff (don't even start...) and we ended up at a Joanne's fabric store. Being bored out of my mind, I was just poking around, and found a bolt of fabric called "Chiffon". It is nearly a dead ringer for flo-rite material and is $8 per square yd. You can get it in any color, too. It is pretty close to the stuff A/C uses on the air intakes on the M sleds, and near as I can tell it is pretty tough too. So I bought a whole yard, explained to the nice lady it was going on my bada$$ snowmobile, and put it on. R&D to follow, but I figured for $8 I could give it a go.

Just thought I might pass it along:beer;

its not butter its chiffon:) will have to remember this, have done several different covers and always ended up using a prefilter cover and cutting it up. do an update on this when you get it in the snow and let us know how the material holds up and if it keeps the pow/water out!!!

The "authorized" filter material is treated with a DWR (water repellant). You will get a noticeable difference if you treat your filter material. I used a Nik Wax product in a spray bottle for water proofing clothes.

After soaking the fabric it is important to tumble dry it to have the best effect, i used a hairdryer.

I can hold a handful of water with my filter before i goes through. It will still let air through.

I think frogskins have some kind of impregnated adhesive, its not really a tape I don't think.
I took the sled out today. We were riding in about 3 feet of feathers....and the chiffon worked awesome. The snow was so light that just riding around, not doing powder turns or anything, the snowdust would clog your intake. The chiffon shed water, did not freeze over (like the stock intake ones did) and kept all the fine snow out. I have a friend that used it to make a BDX style intake, and he had the same results, except that his hood doesn't fit well anymore, and he had 2 inches of snow on top of the cloth. I also have it behind my side panel vents on the clutch and exhaust sides, and it worked well there, too.

I applied mine all from the hood side, and just used black RTV silicone to hold it on. Apply the silicone, and then put the chiffon on, working the silicone into the cloth to hold it. It won't come off unless you hit a tree or something.

and $8 did two sleds, all the vents.
