Well knowing absolutly nothing on the topic other than that Reagan was shot, but survived, I have formed a idea from the letter.

Hinckly is mentally messed up and thought Reagan was sleeping around, or he actually was. So Hinckly tried to assassinate him, but failed.

Close. Hinckley shot Reagan, not out of some sort of jealousy or Reagan love ineterest, but in an effort to impress the object of Hinckley's obsession, Jodie Foster. I could think of tens of other late 1970s/early 1980s actresses to fixate on. No idea why John chose her...
