Getting ready to buy a truck this summer and need some FACTS. I went from 1 to 5 sleds and am planning on getting an enclosed. Well the old 99 Ranger ain't gonna quite make it sooooo......

I haven't made up my mind on gas or diesel yet but the Cummins is looking good. Chevy duramax not far behind. and Ford diesel-NO WAY.

Q. I have been told that the new low sulpher fuel sucks and loses mpg??? Y/N?

Also been told that the ford V-10 does a good job and is not too bad on gas especially concidering $8-9000 difference in purchase price.

No Pissin match, PLEASE. Thanks guys  :D

Whoever told you the V10 is good on gas was either incredibly naive or an outright liar or in denial or something. They're terrible. My uncle had a van with one of those in it and he averaged about 9 mpg unloaded around town with it, maybe 12 unloaded on the highway, and he's not the only person I've heard miledge complaints from ... but IMO the ford V10 isn't near as good as the Chevy Big Block ;) .... They're definatley not any better on gas than an 8.1L from GM is ...

With that said, it still might be worth it if you can get one for that much less than a diesel.

I did, but with the 8.1L ....

My old man has an 02 chevy dmax, quad cab 3/4ton HD etc.

17 mpg unloaded on the highway avg, 20 if you baby it like you've got 2 gallons left and the nearest gas is 70 miles away.

I borrowed it for a couple trips a few winters back, 4 guys/sleds on a steel 4 place (you know the one) and we got 14mpg. Now I drive a bit faster than the old man but he isn't a granny either. My truck gets 11. I've got the 5.3 ext cab. 1/2 ton. These are real numbers, not an est. thrown out by the computer (doesn't have one)

The most impressive thing with diesels is they'll pull anything at 70MPH up a hill. The hills outside ester are a whole lot smaller in a diesel then a gasser.

He gets better mileage towing, we're real close unloaded.

One more thing to consider with diesels....at -40f they'll never blow hot air, even with the grill covered.

Every study shows you won't "save" money overall until well after 100,000 miles. Oil changes etc and price of diesel.

So unless you are sure you're going to really keep it... it's not a money saving issue.

As for towing.. the big gas engines have higher tow ratings overall due to their lighter weight. (on the 3/4's HDs)

At speed a diesel will out pull for sure, but your decision. with the current price of diesel you won't beat a gassers running cost for a long time.

I just bought a new diesel and wrestled with the problem.

Now one more thing... diesels are underrated for their towing due to registration reasons. Most can actually pull much heavier than their rating but if they rated them that way you would be registering it commercial.

So you have much more headroom in towing with a diesel overall although if you were to tow over the limit and get into a serious accident you coudl be in trouble.

Lot's to consider I know I jsut went through it.

The new trucks are sweet though.

Bah get a cummins and get it over with!

15-16mpg hoppin around town. about 19 passing all those motorhomes and blue chevy halftons! Decently loaded going home from arcticman.

Real world numbers bro!

That's pure stock, no chip.

What's wrong with using the Ranger. 27' enclosed behind that would be a real adventure! LOL

Go with the G/M

I did, but with the 8.1L ....

Same here. Went with a used 8.1 and not looking back. I'll never bag on the diesels because they have their place and many of them could do circles around me while towing heavy loads. For my situation, a diesel doesn't make financial sense.

One thing I do know about my gasser. I can leave it parked for a week in -30 temps and I guarantee it will start.

I went from my a 99 Powerstroke to New Tundra.. I like the Tundra a lot I just wish it had a little bigger gas tank. It is not the best on mileage but it does pull nice and fun to drive around compared to the old tank..

What mileage are you getting in the toyota? 5.7L?

I have been getting 12 or so around town.. I am also running 35 tires.. With the sled deck and 2 sleds on it I get 10 when I travel at 75 on the odometer.. I just did my 5000 mile oil change so we will see if it gets any better..

I have had 4 cummins in a row. Not had any problems with them at all.
Getting about 15 running empty with the 6.7L (2k miles on it) at about 75mph.

And I have never had a problem with any of them starting either.

Also depends what you are going to use it for. Cant bet the room in the 4 door pickups or megacabs, especially when loaded up with gear for sledding.

Ford V10 is NOT good on GAS. tons of power yes mileage BAD. last year we took a V10 ford and a Duramax from central MN to Island park both 4 guys/sleds in 24 ft enclosed trailers. duramaxx around 12 MPG average and V10 was at 5 MPG. (we weren't light on the throttle). Overall my brother's 02 cummins has been awesome 20 on the road and around 15 with the same 24 ft trailer as one of the above. However of the new stuff between the price of Diesel and the initial price on the truck I would have to agree with the 8.1GM if you need that kind of power. And I'm a pretty die hard Ford Guy. Also I happen to like the 7.3L Powerstroke ALOT. but the 6.0 isn't as durable.

At 35mph? :face-icon-small-con

I can't comment on the new Fords but my 02 with a 7.3 gets 18/21 in the summer and about 2mpg less in the winter. Pulling a load back from CA, 4K on the truck and 16K on the trailer at 65mph I got 16 MPG and could pass cars at will on 6% grades. Im a Chevy guy but If I was to buy new right now Id have to look real hard at the Dodge. I never hear anything bad about them and they are far less than the Chevys. Diesel that is.

Same results here. Mine is an '04 Duramax Crew Cab short box, with a Superchips tuner. 4 people in the truck, 4 place steel trailer, 4 sleds. A gasser makes more sense for me but I just love the diesel when we're pulling sleds, no comparison.

No he's got a plenty heavy foot. I don't know why but the newer diesels can't get the MPG that the ones of a few years ago could. look at a new Powerstroke vs one from around 98-99. same with the Cummins. I love HP but I wish they would focus more on the millage than the HP. Any of the new diesels can pull like a freight train but the millage seems to have gone by the wayside. The late 90's trucks got better millage and weren't that far off on the HP. I think a lot of it has to do with ever increasing emissions standards but what's the difference if your burning more fuel to get it.
