A few Avid Cab Heater Questions for 08-11 KTM thumper gurus

I have an 08 EXCR 530 with 16 timbersled LT.

The bike had some serious overheating issues in stock form. I eliminated the thermostat and installed a JD jet kit, as well as modified my stock exhaust. This eliminated the overheating issues I had in the summer time.

I am going to run engine shrouds, and am thinking about the avid carb heater. Does anyone leave this stuff installed year round? How easy is the carb heater to pull on and off of the carb? Also, I assume it makes the entire carb longer front to back, so to run it with the stock air intake boot I would have to cut some material off of the boot right?

It would appear the options are to have two sets of radiator hoses, one for the winter with carb heater plumbing, and one for the summer with now t-stat.

I live in the upper penninsula of Michigan and we get A LOT of snow, so I will plan on riding all sorts of temps and conditions.

These bikes overheating is a known problem. If I put a thermostat back on it, would there be any benefit to just putting a 130 degree stat in?

Might just run the bike with no t-stat or carb heater and see how it does with just shrouds and a carb jacket. Again, will be running on a 2016 LT.

Thanks everyone!

Just put a valve to shut the flow off to the heater ... That said I would run without and see what happens ...

hi
I am just in the process of setting up my 08 530 as well. think I am going to run stock t-stat with an engine shroud and see how it works.

what are you doing for an air intake? I was thinking of removing stock air box and running a pod but now im not sure. if I did would have to find a way of mounting the battery as its attached to air box. plus all the work involved in taking air box off.
so now im thinking of just using pre-filter on stock intake

Boot

Leave the airbox and remove the intake boot. Run pod filter from avid heater in airbox. The large opening left from removing the intake boot will keep snow from plugging/blocking off flow to pod filter.

To op, two sets of rad hoses would be ideal, u could also leave the avid stat in for summer, and route bypass line back to return for motor. I would leave stock intake boot alone and just remove for winter as stated above, then when going back to dirt trim remove avid heater from carb and go back to stock intake

What do you think of the 130 degree stat idea since the 530s are known for boiling over?

Second thought is trying some 12 volt heat wire that draws 5 watts per foot a d wrapping it neatly around the intake of the carb. Should heat up to 150 degrees and stay there, just sent know if it would transfer heat to the carb well enough.

On my 2 moto I ran a pod filter and on this bike I plan to run the timbersled intake that comes with the tss.

The Avid heater wit the smart carb would not clear my stock shock for summer time use on my 13 300xc. I had to go back to the stock carb.

CRAZY

if you are running your stock carb in the summer, thats a huge bummer dude, take the carb heater off and get that smarty back on there for dirt!

OP, i would stick with the 190 stat, you should not have over heating issues.
