A couple ideas to chew on... tanks and seats

Ok, I've been thinking for a while about a couple different ideas and so far I haven't seen that anyone has actually done it.

My thought is...

Has Anyone put a Trail Tank 15 Gallon tank on a 900 and on top of that put a Mountain Assault Seat on top of it?

The benefits:
Increased fuel capacity without using a can (fairly obvious)
Taller seat at the same time (also fairly obvious).

I'm sure this wouldn't be a cheap route to go as once you buy the tank, our stock 900 seats will not fit as the tank is based on using the RAW seat, so you would have to find (or buy new) a RAW seat to send in for the Assault seat rebuild.

Now a couple more questions; Is our console the same shape at the tank as the Raw is? Just thinking about fitment issues with the 05-06 console or if you would have to update to the raw style also. Could the factory electronic fuel gauge be used or would the use of the RAW gas gauge be required?

I know this would theoretically be a very expensive set up for a couple benefits, but could it be done, or has anyone done it already?

That's my question.... Input?:D:D:eek:

I was told at Haydays by the people at the TrailTank booth that this wouldn't be a bolt on setup. The console wouldn't line up the same. The tank spout wouldnt line up the same. And the spot on the tank where your fuel lines hook up is totally different on the newer sleds. They said something along the lines of having to cut a bigger whole in the tank and then putting the 900 setup in it. They said it could be done but you would have to modify some stuff first...

I would like to see it!!

I was looking into converting to the raw seat and tank and the biggest problem is the 900 tank has a little cubby for all the wiring that the newer raw tank wouldn't have in front of the tank.

I've wanted to do this since I saw them last year, and you can probably understand why since you've seen how much gas my sled drinks huh Seth? Aside from the fuel line connections, which I'm not sure about, it seems like fitment wouldn't be a problem. If nothing else, it'd be a good time to update to the '09 console with the rocker switches and clean up the bars in the process:D I'd have a tough time giving up my BOSS seat though...

I can't remember off the top of my head but I think its Fast-Freddie that updated his console and stirrup panels to the 09. It has a slight gap to the iq rmk tank and above the top post mount but that would change with the newer tank. I am mounting switches on my 05 console right now and its been a pain.....

As long as you can fit the new tank under the steering hoop and you got the lines figured out, you could always re-drill the mounting holes a little bit back from stock. Idk, lots to think about......

We have a trail tank in house and exploring the possibilities of some combos that will work for you Polaris guys??? Marc's a Dragon guy.

Input and suggestions are appreciated. Be part of the solution, give us some ideas.

Well I think we have a good running question here so lets continue... Is there any fitment issue with a Mountain assault 2" taller seat going onto the larger trail tank? If the seat base of the original RAW seat is used, would there be a fitment issue involved or would it bolt right up?

Another question..

Have you guys considered doing a +2" taller seat for the early IQ chassis? That being the '05 900 and the '06 600/700/900? (Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't the '07 sleds also the same seat but with the rear plastic box removed?) If so, would that also be a send in and rebuild type of deal like what is done with the RAW sleds? I believe right now BOSS is the only aftermarket seat company with an interest in the early IQ style sleds.

I was just thinking it would be nice to have a couple different alternatives to stock for the guys with the 900s and early IQ sleds.

Thanks

Wonder if I could talk them into putting an 09 tank on mine? lol i'll pay for a new seat! haha

I don't think it has been successfully done yet but it would be tough beans. The fuel lines are different as well as overall shape. The newer tanks don't have the room for all our wiring in front of them either.

This has been discussed for adapting the newer trail-tank extra large tanks to an IQ along with using the newer seat.

I actually seriously considered this, you could easily get some extended quick disconnect lines made, you could possibly move around some of the wiring like the voltage regulator, mounting would be a little different, but I have a feeling it is absolutely possible, somebody just needs to give it a shot!

Anything is possible with the right amount of motivation and $$$$.

GW is right, I brought up the question of putting a trail tank on a 900 a while back and the overwhelming response is that they are just too dis-similar to work together all factors included.

If you are willing to invest the time and $$$ to give it a shot tho I would love to see it done!:eek::D:beer;

Are you challenging me? lol

Well, I got nothing to lose either way as its your project... The only person you would be challenging is yourself!

(I believe we now have thread drift:eek:.... might have to do a little moving later when I get some time and can look for my original trail tank thread):D:beer;

Ugh I have been searching ALL MORNING for your trail tank thread!!!!

Yes overall it was said to be too much modding. Unless you're a professional plastic welder and have both tanks.... good luck. Not saying it can't be done though!!! just saying no-one is jumping on the task

Gee thanks, Glad to know I've made an impact on the forum:rolleyes:;):D:beer;:beer;:beer;:beer;

Mountainhorse has DEFINITELY made an impact of the forum for sure!:beer;:D:beer;

Every day is a helpful day for me. You have done nothing but good things for us 900 guys 94fordguy. I for one, am proud to have such a dedicated moderator for my favorite forum section.

Thanks, Erick

Tank&wrp seat

I found this thread today! I have not seen your idea done yet but would like to see it. I looked at the tank at the mod show this year but just went with the WRP seat. Not sure if you saw my sled on snowest but it has the WRP seat & is a 05 900. WRP makes a seat for the 05/06 rmk's model.Looks great & fits good as they use the stock mounts.
FF:beer;:beer;

p.s. Maybe doug&Mark at WRP could make us 05/06 guys a tank as they do inhouse tanks.

Freddie, Ya, your sled definitely looks good, I just went back and looked at it again to refresh my memory, haha. Coming off an EDGE sled, the stock seat height on the IQ is sooooo comfortable, no more kneecaps to the chin and sore back at the end of the day like on the 800. I think I'd have to get some more ride time on the sled to see if I really want to go higher personally, so far, I'm pretty happy with the extra height from switching chassis':eek::D

I know one thing tho, If somebody made a larger tank that would bolt on to our sleds without any mods required (and that would use the stock 05-06-07 seat), I WOULD get one... I hate having to worry about gas as I generally lean into the throttle a respectable amount when I'm having fun and the stock 10.8 gallon tank is a bit on the small side coming off a sled with an 11.8 gallon tank.

If WRP or someone else was to make one for us, I know it would sell.... we get a fair amount of traffic in this forum for a sled that was only made for 2 years, that means a lot of diehards still like em:D

Ya the new IQ ride is so much better one of the guys i ride with has the same sled as you 02 151 edge, i try to get him to ride mine but he won't.
Thinks he'll like it to much and have to up date haha.I need to get some pic. out to Doug at WRP i'll talk to him and see if they are thinking about a tank build.I know it would sale as many guys starting to build the 900,s now, & put turbos on.

I did the 09 console and stirrup vents and it literally fit up almost perfect! not really any gap. yes they do follow a different line tho
