96 rmk driveshaft ?

anybody know if this is the correct stock driveshaft shaft for a 96 ultra rmk?
i had an sks of same year and i dont remember the removable bearing collar.

no 96 rmk guys?
it has "97 98 polaris" written on side of a driver, junkyard style. that dont sound right to me either, but..
well maybe i can just run it if i find some set screws to lock the collar down..?

It will work, the collar does not need set screws. When you put the lower gear on it pinches the collar up against the shoulder on the shaft. There is a o-ring under that collar that seals the oil in. Polaris went to this style like back in the early 90s. The collar is the seal surface for the seal in the back of the chaincase. Check to see if that seal is the correct size to fit the collar. If not just put one in out of the later machine. The hole in the chain case is the same size. Seal is the only thing different. To get that shaft in you may have to remove the chaincase. Other option is to just run 3 drivers. Cut the one off the speedo side and it will go in without removing the chain case.

The bearing on the speedo end is the old style and works fine. Original style had a lock collar and set screw where the one you have just has set screws. Later shafts were slightly larger on that end and used a press on bearing. All 3 will clamp fine with the three hole clamping plates under the speedo drive.

the chaincase end is not really what i am concerned with, but thank you for that info! there were no screws in the collar on the speedo side. that collar just slides real easy on/off, so i guess i just need 2 set screws. seems kinda cheesy to me tho as they are only on one side of the shaft so if theres any slop it will rotate out of balance, but i guess its just an old snowmobile not a Ferrari right...
maybe im gettin too picky but just want to make sure it's stock, so i can start with a clean slate here.

The older indys used a 1" lock collar bearing on that end, I could look in the shop and find a part # if you need it. I'd just pull the bearing thats on there and replace it anyway, you could get one almost anywhere and they cost about $15. BB454 is right, you'll have to pull the chaincase to install a 4 driver shaft, I'd press off the 2 outer drivers and just run the 2 inners, alot less hassel and will work fine.
 
If you aren't set up with a press, removing the chaincase for the install isn't that big of a deal. Just one more step, but I think there are only 4 bolts.
 
this was in the sled when i got it, pulled the case already to see if a 98 case would fit in, no go, so now i left the case loose till i get er back together.
previous owner had 2" track shoved in there with these nine tooth drivers which rubbed really bad so ive got some 8 tooths for it but not 100% sure yet if i should have them pressed on this junkyard lookin shaft....
i was thinkin by 96 they were using the solid shafts, i think my last ultra sks was but cant recall for sure as i had a few sleds since.

If you go with the 8 tooth drivers, make sure they have the metal collars around the drivers. I had some on an XLT that I long tracked and ended up spinning the shaft inside the drivers. Walk down the hill and come back later to tow it home.

That bearing should slip of but it is probably rusted on. That style fits tighter than the collar style and is just held in with the set screws. As mentioned above, good idea to replace it while it's out.
Polaris used solid shafts all the way through the edge series sleds although the edge shaft is a little larger. Old ones were right at 1 inch, edge are 1 1/16.

maybe im using the wrong terminology, but i would consider this shaft the collar style. the collar being the part the bearing is pressed onto in this photo, and that assembly slides easily on/off the shaft due to no set screws and maybe a little wear.
 
Hi there!

Not sure if it helps, but my -96 RMK Ultra has the same kind of bearing. You´re supposed to tighten the collar to the axle by twisting it, and then using the set screws to prevent it becoming loose.
