94 670 in a 99

i got a buddy thats putting a 94 670 motor into his 99...whats the best way to do the wiring? he has both sled just the 99 motor is junked..

99 was a 670HO...the pistons / cylinders are different.
the 99 should also have DPM...
quite sure carbs are different, airbox (if it was a HAC setup on the 94)...

he will be giving up a lot to go to the 94 setup.

the 670s weren't nic'd if i remember right, so it'd be easy to fix a cylinder..and get pistons.
unless it was crank case/shaft issues...

if it were me, i wouldn't give up the HO & DPM for the older 670.

Here is the short version...

Yes, you will notice a power difference between the two motors, but, if you want to get on the snow and you already have a running 94 engine, I say go for it.

Although both the 94 and the 99 engines are both 670cc, they share almost no parts. BUT, like the 'ol small-block chevy, you can mix and match parts if you know what you are doing. Here are some options-

The easiest route would be to use the complete 94 ignition system, meaning the flywheel, stator, coil, and CDI module. Only connection to the stock harness would be the kill wire, and the plug for the voltage regulator. If the regulator plug is different (I think that they are actually), you will have to either splice wires, or just use a 94 regulator. Going this route, you will have to remove the DPM, including the DPM manifold to the carbs, and re-jet the carbs accordingly. If you have the 94 carbs, you can use them. Depending on what the engine came out of, they will be either 38's or 40's. If you do not have the 94 carbs, you can use the 99x 44mm carbs if you change out the carbs, boots, and RV cover along wtih the 99 oil pump. Again, you will have to jet accordingly. I would use a 99 MXz 670HO as a baseline for jetting, as they did not have DPM, but shared the 44mm carbs. That would get you close on jetting, and then you would have to fine-tune it from there.

If you insist on keeping the DPM, this will require drastic measures in trying to use the 99 ignition system on the 94 engine. I've done it, and with a little work, it can be done, but will require a more lengthy reply on my part.

You could also use the 94 engine parts to rebuild the 99x motor, but this opens up a HUGE can of worms if you need to use the 94 crank. Again, it can be done, but will require an even lengthier response. If the 99 just burned up a cylinder, you can use the 94 cylinders, pistons, and head on the 99, or use the 94 cylinders, with 99 "x" style flat-top pistons along with the X head. Many options....

Oh, and btw, ALL 670's have cast-iron liners. None of them are nic'd.

This is the "short version", in that I originally had a very lengthy response, but it "accidently" got erased before I posted it.....

The key-way for the flywheel is indexed differently on those two engines. The 99 MXZ 670 HO had DPM from what I remember. What is wrong with the 99 670 engine? In stock form they differ in power, but modded they will both make the same power.

im not sure what all went on the 99..from what i here ..the 670 was a mod that went bad.. not fixablie is what i was told. he had 4 sleds and trailer ripped off years ago..so he picked up a 94 running and the 99 no motor.. wanted to put the 94 motor in a bit newer body...just to get back riding again. so i was trying to help by finding the easyest way..

Yup! To put a 94 crank in my 97 case, I broached a new keyway in my flywheel to re-index it. Easier than machining the crank. Then I installed the 96-up style PTO bearing spacer on it to get oiling to the outer bearing, and to finish it off added machined 1/4" spacers so that I could space out the stator and recoil, as the older crank is also a 1/4" longer on the MAG side. PIA to figure out how to get it to work, but once it was done seemed like a piece of cake. Why would I do that?? I had the crank, and was too cheap to buy the correct one!:D

I didn't think that the 99HO MXz had DPM. If it does, my bad....

DWH- Didn't I sell you all the DPM stuff off of my 98x last year? How did that work out??

Could have been. I bought two last season. I don't remember one coming from Alaska, but one came from Utah. It all worked good and now I have a complete spare, I hope to never use.
