900 Primary Crank Taper - Parts Listings

Am I reading the Polaris parts listings right?

In checking the parts listings for an 06 900 primary it shows 3 versions of the primary...

Manual Start
Electric Start
Manual Start w/updated "large taper" crank.

1322535 - Asm., Drive Clutch, Basic 223 [Incl. All Less 4,10]
1322536 - Asm., Drive Clutch, Basic 224 [Incl. All Less 4,10][w/Electric Start]
1322520 - Asm., Drive Clutch, Basic 222 [Incl. All Less 4,10][Large Taper][Use w/2203617 Large Taper Crankshaft Kit]

So, if I'm interpreting this correctly, only manual start engines would get the updated crank with the large taper & the updated crank does not apply to e-start versions?

Color me mildly confused.

I cannot say for sure but since the 'large taper' came later on - its possible that they sell that 'large taper' service kit with a stationary sheave on the clutch that is drilled and able to add on the ring gear for an electric start option. You can run a clutch without the ring gear on it but it should be re-balanced accordingly. Again - I am not 100% sure on that. You would have to check with a dealer but I do know its an option.

Yes! I have the updated clutch and crank. And there is no bolt holes for a starter ring. Why do you ask?

I think the old smaller taper is just left on there parts listing for reference as they do not sellit anymore, atleast I am pretty sure they wouldn't. The clutches that come with the kits do not have pre-drilled holes for a ring gear so there are 2 different clutches, one with ring gear and other without, not sure why. Everything else in the kits are the same(aside from the large/small taper cranks of course). Just diff clutches that is why different part #'s.

I'm pretty sure the dragon/pro rmk clutches for electric start are the correct ones for the 900 with the updated large-taper cranks that have electric start.

Good question for Indy Dan!

I'm agreeing this may indeed be a good question for Indy Dan... or someone that may know all the history.... would be a good thing to know for those (like me) that stay on the lookout for used clutches.

Evrery time I think I may have a handle on it, I get another curve ball thrown at me.... LOL

One thing I thought I was pretty sure of at this point is that when you look up the sled parts listings from Polaris, if the part description contains the words "Large Taper" or the letter designation "BT", that's the updated version... for example:

Asm., Drive Clutch, Basic, BT [Incl. All Less 5,11,18-20]

Asm., Drive Clutch, Basic 222 [Incl. All Less 4,10][Large Taper][Use w/2203617 Large Taper Crankshaft Kit]

In my case, I needed the taper recut for a Ski-Doo crank... & according to the guy I have recut 'em, the large taper version can't be used as there isn't enough material left around the bore to work with reliably... so naturally I don't want to waste my money & time getting one of those without knowing until it's too late.

OK, so from what I know at this point... simple... look up what sled it came off of and make sure the part description doesn't say it's the large taper... easy enough, right?

Well, not really it seems.

I came across a really good deal on a very low miles used one off a 2009 800 Switchback with E-start.

In checking the part number...

1322800 - Asm., Drive Clutch, Basic, E.S.

So far so good... also, the real good news is that someone else I know told me this is the part number he orders when he buys a new one for cutting the taper for a Ski-Doo crank... so, given all that, I grab it & send it over to have the taper cut, get it back all done & all seems well.

Now, in making my notes for future reference, I go back to the Polaris parts listings & do a quick seach for other models using the same primary & find this listing under the 2013 800 RMK

1322800 - Asm., Drive Clutch, Basic BT, E.S.

So is that indeed actually the large taper primary? And, if so, how did I get it recut for the Ski-Doo taper without the shop calling me back & saying it was the wrong one?

Like I said, at this point I'm not sure if I'm getting it figured out or if I'm getting more confused.... LOL
