900 engine rebuild

I just finished the top end on my 900 and know that the anti freeze needs to cycle completely through the cooling system. What is the best way to do this? I was told that getting the front end way up in the air so it can get back to the cooler. Is putting it in the reservoir good and just letting in cycle through? Any help i appreciate. Just want to make sure I don't get it to hot right after putting it together. Thanks

I always fill using the thermostate housing. Once that is full I put the thermostate in and tighten the bell, then fill the bottle. You will still need to refill at least once. Warm the engine up and shut it off, go to lunch and check the bottle when you get back. Take it a mile run, let it cool down and check it again. You get the picture.

The air that gets trapped in the system needs an uphill path to follow so that it can escape. Raising the front of the sled so that the path from the very rear of the heat exchanger to the recovery bottle is all uphill will allow the vast majority of air out of the system. As suggested, filling the system through the thermostat opening will help a great deal. If you do that, in combination with having the front end raised, you will get 99% of the air out. You will still want to check and top off after the engine has reached operating temperature and coolant has circulated the entire system.

That's what I was thinking but made the mistake once of not doing this on a sled and it got hot right away and ended up doing some damage. Thanks!

Raise the front of the sled. Slip a long flat blade screwdriver between the coolant exit hose and the thermostat housing, without the hose clamp in place clamping the hose. This gives the air some place to go. Fill the bottle with anti freeze till the bottle is 90% full or anti freeze runs out around the screwdriver.
Pull the screwdriver, put the hose clamp and bottle cap on, fire it off, feel the rear cooler for heat. If no heat after 2-3 minutes repeat till circulation occurs.
This has always worked.

Fill it at the hose going to the thermostat. I have done this every time and NEVER had a bubble problem.
