So we where at the top of our local hill climbing hills today the 900 started running funny. soo we pulled the plugs on one of the plugs there was a pretty good sized chunk out of the electrode. I am guessing i need a new top end at least. Is that all?

Can you post some pics of it?
Also try taking the pipe off and have a look in the Y-pipe to see if you can notice any scuffing on the pistons or cylinder walls. If you have access to a 'bore scope' you can have a peak inside the plug holes at the top of the motor to see any possible visible damage to the tops of the pistons.
Did you replace the plugs and ride it out or did you tow it?

If there are any "chunks or bits" missing... best to wash out the pipe with degreaser and pressure washer... you could suck something back into the motor from the exhaust after your repairs. (been there, done that) ..

We changed the plugs and tried to limp her back on one side for the ride back 30 miles down South Fork Mountain. Ran fine except when i loaded on the trailer heard something definlately not happy inside. Was hopping to make it another month and then do the pistons, 06 motor mounts, throttle cable, gas tank deal, the tons of updates, radiator delete, intake, upgade the clutch and add like ten vents. I was an uneducated purchaser of a snowmobile package without researching the 900 first. Guess i will just start now. Thanks for the advice and the hundreds of posts yall already have here.

Bingo its an 2005, i read that even polaris recommends switching at least to the 2006 piston. I am gonna get the wiseco top end kit.

Naw... go with the stock pistons... better for most people ... and the price is good as well.

I second the go with stock 06 pistons. They are the most reliable and will last longer than the wiseco's. One of the reasons I switched my 975 back to and 866 was to get rid of the wiseco pistons that only last 1000 miles.
