9 go boom, recoil/stator :(

ok so I went out today and was having a blast, untill my recoil grenaded:mad:. made some ugly noises and left me on the side of a hill. turns out when it went it cracked the housing and left a whole lot of metal/plastic shavings on the belly pan. i would like to take a look at the stator to make sure i didnt wipe it out aswell, how hard is this with the motor in the sled? or is it worth it just to take it out, and go with grade 8 and look at mounts and other misc? i would rather not open a new can of worms due to i cant aford big fixes atm. but dont want to be stranded again.

As long as you can get to all the bolts it's not too hard. Has the motor been out of the sled before? If not it may be best to pull it as you would have to loosen the mounts anyway in order to get to the lower 1 or 2 housing bolts. If you can get all the bolts out your good to go.

good luck :beer;

ditto

i had to pull my stator and flywheel to get it fixed last year and even the bottom bolt was in the recoil housing...was a PITA to get out but just had to loosen the bolts not pull the motor completely

now....what made the recoil go boom?? just wondering because i have mine off putting on a new armor cord and dont want to mess up

well i havent had a chance to dig into it yet but i would way if its anything like my old skidoo motors, the plastic cam lever thing caught the crank and riped its self to pieces. possibly the stator with it?

Plastic cam lever thing can't do that in the Polaris.

I don't want to jinx you, but I'm betting stator/flywheel/even crank end came apart.

If the housing broke then one of the hard parts had to come lose in there... the pull starter doesn't have any hard parts like that (everything is generally made of plastic).

I hope I'm wrong... you'll have to tear it apart and find out.

ya i hope nothing to bad happened, but im sure the plastic cam and the spring and the crank catch for the cam all riped apart. just going to open it up now but my guess is that the crank catch bolts loosened up and it hit the recoil parts and its all bad from there........ill post the problem with some pics soon. any one else have this happen before?

PS: it did run after the first incident, but i had to ride it like that to get out of a bowl then it died after i got out and towed it home from there. that is when i broke the recoil housing.

EDIT: oh yeah just found out about the crank sensors, could it be posible that i also took one of them out? and im asuming this would cause the motor to stall out

well my guess was off but its still all bad:mad:. turns out the stator and flywheel shreded some metal between each other. not much damage on the stator... the top 2 posts have some chafing on the sides ( thin wires) and everthing else seems good.the flywheel has looked better. the inside alum/tin shield around the magnets is fairly chewed up and the cps tabs are bashed up in the front, all 7. and the 5 tab sensor is chiped on the side, other one seems good. we cleaned it up and lightly put the flywheel back on, pulled the plugs and gave it a few pulls. still has a hard bright spark. so did i take out my light coils or somthing else? if i still have spark does this mean its still salvageable? havent checked for res. yet tho. fighting with gas tank lines.
recoil is shot. all but the spring died.

PS: if any one has say a good recoil and flywheel/stator and are around the vernon bc canada area, i might be able to take em off your hands

I would replace both of them. They are way too many electrical problems with these 900's that have supposedly good stators in them let alone damaged ones.

Another option for having your stator rebuilt is Bata's Electric in Calgary. It's a little closer to home for you. I talked to these guys at the Edmonton Sled Show and was told they rebuild all makes and types of stators. Their phone number is 403-276-9544 or cell #403-703-9544.

this same thing just happend on my sled. I ended up with new recole/flywheel/and stator. I could have got away with just new crank pickups and the ring that goes on the flywheel to ketch air.
