860 or rear skid 09xp163

I've been reading a lot of threads on these big bores and aftermarket skids, both about the same price. My question is what mod will get you the higher high mark if you can only aford to do one.

Yes, Go with the 860 the best improvement call up big john

thanks for the reply are there any cooling issues with the 860s. I road with a couple of big bore polariss this weekend and they were constantly overheating when none of the other sleds out there including the turbo's had any issues?

Suspension is my choice.

I did the bigbore 885 on my 08 XP. The engine works very strong. I put a RACERS EDGE suspension kit on after the engine work. If I had done the suspension first I probably would not have done the engine. I rode an 800 with the same suspension upgrade and I feel it would climb just about as good as my 885. I can outclimb stock 163's and a 154 885 with stock suspensions. I cannot outclimb a 163 with modified suspension and stock engine unless I use the juice.

Racers Edge Calgary Alberta is the supplier =/- $2300 installed.

That is not very good advertisement for the 885.

My vote is go with the 860...The stock suspension on the XP works great and there is not alot of room for improvement.

Well, I haven't seen a BB work right yet (although I am sure some do) but I can tell you you can do a 163" for just a few hundy if you shop well and when you consider that you can sell most of your used parts for about the same amount as you spend. Then spend a bit of money on clutching and your golden.

My RKT 860 has run perfect all season. No overheating issues. The 860 is a much better investment if you want perormance. If that 885 is getting out climbed by stock motor sled that is otherwise the same, there is definitley something wrong with the set up.

I don't think you get the drift of ronnboe's question. He asked what would get him higher up the hill, suspension or motor. If you take powder up the hill suspension will make way more difference than motor, when your realistically only talking 10-15 HP. There is nothing wrong with my motor. It runs fine and is properly clutched. The sled seriously outperforms my buddies who has the same motor and clutch setup, but did not do his suspension. Now if you are talking hillclimbing on hard pack or slingshotting off of someones trail maybe motor will do the trick. Not sure. I always like to make my own trail up the hill in powder. In the right snow a 163 with properly modified suspension will be right there with me. There is nothing wrong with the power delivered by a properly clutched 800r. Ronnboe asked what would get him further up the hill. so I assumed he was riding in powder too.

rear skid

i have been thinking about dooing the suspention, just have a hard time withg the price of it, for what you get, looks nice and clean just wish it was 1200-1500 just easyer to swallow, all said and don i think his is around 2300 isnt it??

That 156x2.5 Camo makes a bit of differance just by itself.:beer;;)
Does that R.E. susp. mod use the stock skid and modify it to something like an M-10?? Looks like it.

Seems very pricey ($2300) for a rear arm and shock. But I guess that is CND funds and labor. From the pics it looks like you keep the stock rails, wheels, front arm and spring. I would still have to see it to believe its any better in the deep powder than the stock skid, on the whooped out trails yea, but in the powder, no.
I'll stand by my 860 till someone proves me wrong on the hill. So far no normally aspirated sled has.

I am with Max on this, my 860 goes uphill 1/3 faster than stock xp so no suspension will compensate for that under typical uphill rides. If you ride a good running rkt860 you will say Holy S,,,.

Interesting Discussion. The Racers Edge suspension is a kit that turns your stock skid into an M-10 (cheaper version) When climbing the suspension does not drop like stock does in powder, As a result there are more paddles on the ground and way less ski lift. This suspension makes the sled climb. The ultimate combo is still big bore and suspension.If you could afford to do both than do them. If I could only afford to do one thing and powder climbing was the issue I would do the suspension. I have been running big bores for 5 years, First was a Crankshop 900 and now a Split Second 885. I had no issues with either engine or climbing. This was the first suspension tweak I made from stock and it made such an prefound difference in performance and ride I believe in suspension. The Turbo Yamaha's all change suspension in order to keep more track on the ground, without the changes I believe they dig down way too quick.:beer; Come to Revelstoke for a demo:beer;

As Brotha knows, I did the M-10 1st, as well as a 162x2.5 and i could climb as well as his 885. He was faster but I could climb higher. All in the skid & track. I am with him on his theory of suspension first. I have been out with several 860 motors since, some with suspension/track upgrades. In the deep snow mine is quite a bit better, unless they have the upgrade. Since then I have a new 860 & we will find out this weekend:D
And like Brotha says "Come to Revy for a comparison"

We will have all different configurations of tracks/skids/motors this weekend as several are going out...

What kind of track speed do you have on a climb with your 860 & what does the stocker pull for speed? A good working stocker will do 75-80/kmh in the deep. I have a slightly ported 800 that gets me 90/kmh. the 860 is about 10-15/kmh faster. Not try to start anything here, just like to compare Kelseys to Ralphs.

Thanks again for all your responses. Yes I was mainly concerned with climbing in fresh tracks in powder. It almost sounds like aperson needs to afford to do both.:D

Last time out in the powder I was doing 59 mph (95kph) under load with my 885. See you there this weekend Sheriff. Leaving Thursday night. Your 860 should rock.

I'm also onthe suspension wagon this year, i did the Racer's Skid and absolutly love as you can see from this thread i started a few weeks ago http://www.snowest.com/forum/showthread.php?t=128551

I've done lots of motor mods in the past from porting to big bores and decided to leave pretty much everything stock under the hood this season and try some other mods. This skid setup makes the xp's flat out rock. Track speed is up, trenching is down, sled handles like a short track on the trail. Nothing but good to say about it.

Hey Brotha looks like you have a different rear shock than me?

Revdawg and Sherriff. Thanks for the support and backup information to my suspension claim. My shock is different Revdawg because I was a test pilot for Baker last season and I believe there were only 3 or 4 built last year.
