850 ride report....few issues!!

its good to finally get a report from someone who has ridden some deep stuff on the 850, trail rides are no legitimate test. certainly disappointing to hear after all the hype of the new clutch design. I cant imagine the clutches are out of alignment from the factory this day in age. one would assume ski-doo engineering and manufacturing are better than that. Is it possible that with the reduced power in break in mode that is reducing rpm's and therefore creating excessive belt heat and dust?? i have also never been a fan of the huge clutch cover/shroud. seems better to have it open with lots of vents.
 
This may also be a rider issue -- with the fast response of the clutch and engine every time you blip the throttle you will engage and disengage the clutch generating heat guys that are hard on and off all the time instead of smooth will eat more belts period -- lots of high heat cycles eat belts. Remember 4strokes need smooth power application = easy on belts. One of our fellow riders has had all brands over the years and blows belts on any sled he rides even Yamahas. Who ever buys the sleds from him then miraculously has the sled cured of belt problems. But hey even I don't like to be told that I may have something to do with my problems.

Have you thought about adding some weight or adjusting clickers to try and pull the rpm down a bit? The 800 etecs love to be loaded and I would be surprised if the new 850 won't also.
 
LOL yea its gotta be the way Im driving it....I have been riding since 1995, average 1500 miles per season...the last 3 years or 4500 miles I haven't had one belt issue...

2016-174T3

the last 3 sleds rocked...first day out on this one in over the knee to crotch deep snow with vis and bam, I don't think I will be the last either....revy gonna get 3-4 ft here in the next 48 hours....see what happens next week.

I hope it was a fluke but I don't think so....I have a lot of belt dust...like enough for a whole season not just 2 hard days of riding.

hmm I haven't...it pulled 8000 right on the money...should look into it some...does anyone know what they are geared??

In case you hadn't checked this out. I think gearing on 154 and 165 may be the same?

The ease of clicker adjustments and weight changes are so nice on this new clutch. We hope it helps speed up the process in getting a really good clutch combo for the type of riding we do.
 
Please somebody pleeeease tell me how a 280hp Yamaha with monster torque will never eat a $60 belt on a 30 year old clutch design and these companies with all the latest tech can't keep a $200 belt on a 130hp snowmobile:face-icon-small-dis

think I put maybe 2 belts on my old Nytro at 17psi

I still have all the spare new belts I bought when I bought all five of my Yamahas. I can't explain it, but they simply never ate belts.

Only belt I ever had to change was a Supercharger drive belt that disintegrated when one of the drive wheels became unaligned and chewed up the belt.
 
if this is gonna be more of an issue I wont be picking mine up. I had a 09 that ate belts and it was a nightmare.

i blew at least 20-25 belts on my turbo nytro over the course of 5 years in colorado powder. I guess everyone has a different riding style. i hope this does not become the case with the 850 doo!!
 
My first ride this weekend coming up. 154 x 3"
Using High elevation brp kit [pl/pl (170/350), 967 ramp w/16.7g pivot at low elevation. Recommended clicker #3 for 4000~6000 feet
Im at 600~1100 feet so added 0.9g estimated for difference of 5000' to 1000' elevation [5000feet - 1000feet = 4000 feet (c)] then... (0.9 grams x 4(c) = 3.6g)
Added the pivot weight to 19.5 grams, maintaining clicker 3. I'll being weights with me.

Stock gearing is for 66mph @ 1:1, 74mph @ 1/2 overdrive, 80mph @ full overdrive
I expect this to pull 7900~8000 and then say when i get to a place where I can open it up to get somewhere between 66~74mph, engine speed will start to drift low.

I hope these calculations are correct. :juggle:
Have the 170/400 spring too I can change out.

Really im just dying to strip out the clutch parts and throw the new shiz in and go test but....patience Joe, patience (me talking to myself) ha..:face-icon-small-ton

It seems that there is a bit of a problem with this new clutch making heat. It's not the only one I've heard of getting hot but I am wondering if they sealed the engine compartment off so completely that it's holding all the heat in. I'll be installing a blowhole on mine when they become available.
With my 14 800 Skidoo I got 1700 and 1500 out of my belts and changed them before blowing. Just an fyi.
I have never gotten 1500 miles on any of my sleds over the years, anything over 500 and I'm happy.

theres no snow in revy until 4500...up top was 6500 all day. Clickers where they came from and it was bang on 8000rpm all day...I broke in the belt for 25 mile road ride a few days ago. Just hope it was a fluke or something day two went ok...no strings...but I let it cool lots.

I would add the doo black spring (160/303) vs the the blu/blu in the secondary and a gram or 2 for primary weight...shoot for 7800-7900-BJ
