809 Crank bearings???

Has anybody else on here had problems with the PTO bearing on a 809 melting the plastic out of the bearings??? I put a new crank in mine last spring, rode it a few times last year & all this year. The PTO bearings went out yesterday. I am pre mixing 32:1. Just wondering if there is something I am missing or if its just bad luck. Any ideas why they would go out so soon or if there different bearing to use? Thanks

If I remember, those were a 6208 pinned, C-3 some were C-4, with a phenolic retainer (fancy word for plastic retainer). Sounds like you need to drill the case to feed oil to the bearings. The Mag side will probably need done too. The outer PTO bearing gets starved for oil because the inner PTO bearing uses most of it up. Some 809's were packed with the magical Kluber grease like they have used latley with bad results.

How would I get more oil to that bearing?? I understand the drilling part but, I don't have a oil pump or tank. Thanks

When the case is drilled the gas/oil mixture gets pulled through the holes in the case and drools into the bearings. The oil pumps only have enough pressure to get the oil into the case and the turbulance of the rotating assembly does the rest. The oil pump does not pressurize the oil for the bearings.

Thanks for the replies DW. I talked to Bondi engines today & he told me how to fix the problem. The bearing race covers the oil hole, so I just had to drill it at a different angle. They also lined me up with a crank that has better bearings. Thanks again, you were right on the money about the oiling. :beer;:D
