800 Storms are tripples. Most guys don't like the tripples, middle cylinder tends to burn down due to cooling issues. Also the weight, tripples are heavier and most don't run real strong unless you triple pipe them - adding more weight.
Good part - the sound of those tripples is fantastic!!
Storms came stock triple piped, I have one with a little work done to it and it runs strong. It did however become a back up sled last May when the stator went out and we still had snow.
ive had a xcr 800 and a good friend of mine had a storm both sleds ran very well on a lake!!!hehe they are very heavy for mountain riding imo! to sum it up the motors are strong runners hope this helps
The Storm is good for the trails or lakes, i wouldn't consider one to convert for everyday mountain use because they are a very heavy motor compared to the xcr/ultra. Now you didn't really say what you want to use it for so i'm presuming it's for the hills. If your only going once or maybe twice to the mountains then maybe it's for you, i went the Ultra bigbore route with a lightweight chassis and set it up for boondocking/tree riding and it works very well. I owned a 97. 97s had the most HP. if you get a storm you want a 97 or 98 the best years made. i put a 2000 rmk tunnel on it with a 144 2", rolled the chain case, put an M-10 in it, boss seat with 03 vertical escape clear tank, custom trailing arms, custom handle bars, etc. never had a prob. with motor what so ever. ran real strong UP HILL, not so good in trees, too heavy. I loved it. then I rode an 07 rmk 155. thats what I ride now. I still like the storms for speed.
Runs strong still, and I run PSI pipes at 10000 rpm, makes over 200hp as an 800. I run 600 mains on 46mm rounds if you doubt it makes power. Going on the asphalt next year for sure, should be fun.
