Hey guys,

My dad has a 09 Shift 800 RMK with SLP intake, SLP single pipe, SLP clutching, and PCIII. It had the 2010 update done last fall. Throughout this last winter it would get the DET light on a fairly regular basis with fuel from several different places. Then this past spring it seized up in the snowies. His warranty is up and we just want to get this thing running well and reliable. Is the solution just to run a mix of race fuel to help with the DET? If so, what octane and do you need to put a MOD head on? If you put the MOD head on will it need a timing change? We ride both sea level (Michigan UP) and the snowies in WY...

If at all possible he would rather not need to rely on mixing race fuel but would be willing to if it were necessary. Also, can you run a MOD head with a stock pipe set?

if you add more fuel with the pcIII at the rpm the det light comes on it should solve the problem with det light. I ran half 91 half 100LL with dynotechs maps and never had the det light come on till I deluted the av gas.
 
Yea we ran Dynotech's map and it was very rich. Fuel range went out the window. Had much better results with SLP's #70-216. I had the same setup on my 09 Assault and it hardly ever got DET. Plugs were darker and everything. Is it possible his has a set of faulty injectors? Just fishing for ideas...

get the newest flash in the ecu before you do anything to drastic and fork out 300 plus dollars, it is supposed to help det sensitivity and low elevation riders alot. if that doesnt do it pc3 or pc5 will

We had the 1/14 flash put in it and it didn't change a thing, only richened it up a bit actually making it run worse. SLP recommended that we stick with the original 2010 map because that is what they based the calibration of the #70-216 map on, however they said it would work ok with both flashes. We decided to flash back to the original 2010. We've also calibrated the TPS sensor properly.

are you still running the slp in line resister on the temp sensor? if so take it out. the resistor does not work with any of the new flashes
I have no idea. I would assume I still am because I've never removed anything. Where exactly is it? What does it screw up if its still in?

Also, I've heard rumors of people going back to the '09 head. Has anyone else heard of this?
 
the resistor is just a little pig tail that is in line between the egt probe and the harness, if you trace the wires back to the harness on the front left of the machine you will see where they plug in. if i remember right the slp deal has blue heat shrink around it. The two sleds that we had with the resistor in line made the sleds go into limp mode for no reason what so ever, they would also load up from time to time and take a little while to clean out, and the check engine light would randomly flash. removed the resistor and havent had a hiccup since
 
polaris released a low altitude flash for the d-8's in late april..it is much better then any of the earlier flashes..gets rid of the low rpm bog, much crisper in the midrange(richer) and supposedly slightly leaner up top....sleds defenitly sound better..and are more snappier then the earlier flashes....I do not know how it holds the changes as you go up in altitude but I had mine up as high as 6300 ft. and it was much better then the earlier flash...

say you had this "low altitude" flash and you went to 10,000 ft, what affects would it have?
 
I didn't know they came out with another flash in late April. By then the sled was blown so I guess it didn't matter... I'll look into that for sure.

Lets assume for a second that the mapping is all OK. Is it a possibility that the injectors aren't supplying what the should, leaning the motor out? Or the oil injection is screwed up? Fuel pressure regulator? Anything off the radar for these?

Would putting a different head and changing timing with a mix of race fuel fix this problem also?

I'm just trying to gather as much info as possible so we can get this thing running mint this winter! Thanks for all the info so far guys keep it coming!

there has been burndowns caused by the fuel filter(very good idea to replace it often(I do mine every 500 miles)) , also have been a few cases of low pump pressure related burndowns at less then a 1/4 tank of fuel...(I think kinser had an issue with this one so hopefully he might have more info) this latest map may still have issues in warm weather(mine went on 1 ride after the flash..ran flawless all day (did 3 plug checks during the morning all perfect)yet late in the afternoon after 95 mile powder ride..it scuffed both pistons...engine temps at 125, outside temps were 48-50 degrees.... polaris warrantied it but my guess is it leaned up to much due to over 30 degree outside air temps...(which others have reported scuffs under warmer temps as well on all the previous flashes)...dealer reassemled the whole sled..tested every sensor on it..every sensor reads within spec(sled had 600 miles on the 10 update with 0 issues.before this flash was done..)I do think this flash is the best one polaris has released since the 08 flash..but I think a fuel controller and a set of egt's are still needed on these motors...
