Is anyone running 18-42 gearing on an 09 800 dragon, Just wondering what your thoughts on it was if you were running it.The reason I ask is I have an 18 tooth gear coming for the top and am currently running a 41 bottom which will give me a 2.28 ratio. A 2.28 ratio is good but did not want to put any more dogleg in the chain so thought about putting a 42 bottom. The only problem is that would put my ratio at 2.33, not sure if thats to low. I do mostly boondocking and climbing at 4000'- 6000', nothing special with the sled, just a slp single and venting. The rest is stock, including the track and drivers.

Most people don't go with the 18 top for the reasons you described. Too much dog leg and too small of a diameter gear for the chain to wrap around. Personally, I think you would really like the 18/42. Mountain sleds just run more efficiently with lower gearing. My thinking is that you want at least 2.25:1 anyway. Your clutches will be happier and you will be happier. :D Boon docking and climbing you are more worried about track speed and not top speed so I think you would be making a very good decision.

I would just go with the 19/42. 19/41 worked good on mine but I dropped mine down when I switch tracks, I wouldn't run the 18

and if you want to make a big difference for our area put a camo extreme on it, that will make the biggest difference

Rmkboxer I talked with you at the snow show, I was looking for a 42 tooth then and you said you might have one at home. If you do would you sell it, and for how much.
