800 cfi mods and the "fix"

been looking into building a Poo as of late and been trying to read up on the 800 . We all now the history of this engine but there is always a fix.
From what Im hearing the "fix" kit is working out well as it is using a taller piston eliminating some of the side force as the piston is on the up stroke.
Dont have all the info and Im look here for some help.
-Cyl skirt to case clearence. is this a problem on all or a hit and miss thing.
- we all have heard of the wild piston to cyl clearance but after some reading it sounds like the piston its self is on the short side and the stroke to rod is under the 2x of stroke.
Who is building these engines up with GOOD success.
Carls 860 is one option. @ $3995.
Lets say if you have a Dragon that needs an engine what would you do.

Pls feel free to correct me if I have posted any wrong info. thx

Thunder, IMO you are correct on your assessment of the motor. Now to answer your questions:
#1 MTK and Carls.
#2 yes it is…. $$$ = (Use the money to buy a pro if you want a Poo) not cost effective.
#3 Stock with an MTK kit, spare regulator and PC5 (assuming all it needed was a top-end).

The question, "if you have a dragon and it needs a motor". I would try to find a cat (suzuki) 800 to put in there. Or an older 700 Polaris motor. There are endless options for reliable 600's as well. That is assuming the old motor is either missing from the chassis or totally destroyed. Polaris chassis :thumb: Polaris engine design :frusty: :censored:

The other downfall with Polaris is that we are stuck with the voltage regulator issue hanging over our heads. Although, that is much less than the motor problems themselves. The fix kit really seems to be performing well.

I disagree.

Put in a set of pistons that fit and you are fine. The motor issues are from the pistons slapping around inside the cylinders.

I agree with you. I was referring to it either out of the sled or needing a complete rebuild from the crank to the cylinders. Having done most everything you can to my own sled. Hindsight tells me I would have been financially better off taking another route.

Granted, to many people the $$ is not an issue. For me, I would be done sledding and there would be a chassis for sale.

The Fix completely changed the characteristics of the engine , for starters the exhaust has a different sound , ( smoothed it out so much that now I hear the air box rattling ) the idle actually has a lobe like a v-twin ( must have something to do with the over kill of a crank and magnets :noidea: the left ski from the drivers side doesn't shake to it's own groove anymore , and the first time loading it on the trailor was awkward because it actually has tork and feels like an 800 . One of those fluid dyne balancers might not be a bad idea if you could find one . She'll be out in the field till the new year . Any bets ?? :face-icon-small-hap

That wasn't the case wth the wifes 2010 , the jug was within tollerance on the 2010 before it had to have the mag side welded . Now it's perfect after sending the piston with it.

My twin pipe 50% race gas non ported 800 CFI 09 would give my buddy's Carl's 860 single pipe 09 Dragon absolute FITS. I have the entire kit for sale (see swap) and it's a proven hot rod setup with everything you need to KICK BUTT with an IQ RAW 800. I DID ALL OVER THE WEST and it was FUN!

This is the way I think , because money is always money and if you can get more for your money going another route then,,,
I can build a pretty good engine for 4k if I can start with a good foundation.

So is there someone out there setting up these cranks w longer rods and a cyl shim.??
