8" Rear Wheels to Save Track?

JUDGED

I was at a show this fall and a person mentioned all the track issues are around because the rails in the rear had been changed. The change lets the track catch a bit and is causing these worn window issues we hear about. He said on a few sleds he swapped the rear wheels in the skid to 8" and that little bit is saving the track. Thoughts?

The change to the rails has NOTHING to do with the track wear, and 8" wheels solve nothing... the only solution is to fully clip the track.

No it aint.. You are just trying to cover the main fault with makeup!
The serie 5.1 track had the same clipping as the serie 6/7. Only thing that differs is the missing outer steering nubs that lets the track push out from the inner rail when sidehilling.
With fullyclipped it still tries to push the track outwards, but i guess its harder for it.
This is especially hard on the track on spring snow.

The missing last inches of rails doesnt helt either. Try flick the sled to its side in the garage. You will notice it will try "crumble" the track between railtip and wheels.

The 5.1 DID experience the same wear problem but nowhere near to the extent as the series 6 tracks. Clipped every other window on the non lugged windows are the issue. The series 6 lugs are MUCH stiffer, putting all the pressure upwards onto the slide rails. The track flexes enough to allow the rubber to contact the hyfax thus creating the track wear issue. Yes the missing outer nubs do not help the situation allowing the track to float and dig in even more. But, the missing section is not the problem, if it was, every sled that someone had rail extensions on for the last 10+ years would've ran into the same issue...

Series 5 had the exact same wear, just no one bothered to notice with the outer nubs hiding it from direct view

No, not really. The outher nobs are taking some of the force thats going on. That is a intended design. Some wear will always be when you have rubber spinning against plastic in high speed. Its inevitable...

I have a Series 5.1 that has gone 4 times the miles of my former series 7. And it still looked waaaaay better then the series 7.
The 5.1 track itself outlasted its "life" before its started to shred itself from inside and out. Thats imo working as intended!

If you want to shed rotating weight and still have a durable track, then removing the outer steering nubs and try to "repair" the design flaw with fully clip the track aint the way... Thats a major loss in performance. The clips themself weighs hell of a lot more then small rubber pieces(nubs).

+ having the design without the steering nubs create a force on the rear idler wheels that isnt intended. At speed they try to force themself of the track. Thus small plastic pieces start to chip from the wheels.

+ you have increased hifax wear due to letting the track sit at an angle to the hifax when sidehilling.

Alot of really bad problems occur from removing those steering nubs!

I had a 2.4 on my axys last year and it was brand new. Noticed that the unclipped windows had wear after a few hundred miles. Running fully clipped this year now and no issues.
