700 MSRX

I'm looking at buying a '98(?) msrx with triples pipes and a 162"x2.5" I have always liked what I heard about the reliability of the 700 triple mountain maxes. Is this motor as good reliability wise? I know it has the power valves and the mm's don't. The reason that I'm looking at it is because my future snowmobiling plans will include a lot more trail/family riding than balls to the walls hillclimbing and my mod 900 cat is severely lacking in trail manners. I figured this would be a decent cheap sled for the days that I putt around with the family, but it would still have enough power to have some fun (plus I love triple/triple sleds). I'll still have my 900 for the deep days.

Anybody have one of these? Thoughts?

the rear suspension on 2000 and later were much better than the 1998-1999. although if it has a 162 the suspension may have been changed anyway. I dont think the power valve engine was as reliable as the mountain max engine.

cranks were fixed under a warranty recall. if its still running, its been fixed and there will be no crank issues. dont let that scare you. the pv triple is as reliable if not more so than the redheads .

the power from the srx will outperform the redheads and the weight penalty is insignificant, IF the sled has been set up correctly with the 162 track. if someone simply added extensions from the original 136 to get to 162, be leery. there were several other ways to achieve the length and some worked better than others.

if the front end hasnt been narrowed and/or raised, you will have a submarine. done properly, thats a great sled for its time. hacked together, dont bother.

need more info or even a photo of the rear to properly guide you.

It looks to have a drop and roll and a custom tunnel (MPI?). Rear suspension is from a Polaris 800 Vertical Escape with a big wheel kit. Don't have any pics right now.

The mountain max is a very reliable motor. Add tripple pipes and power rivals the srx, and viper. the dependability is where it shines. Olaaf Aeen had these running clutching tests, mounted to go-carts. They would not die. The mountain max tripple may be old school, but there is a reason you see these old sleds on the mountain. they run. my 2 cents
