6th Gear?

How often do you find yourself in high gears? For me, I would have to ride trails a good 5+ miles to riding. Will I not be able to keep up with sleds with only 5 gears?

You'll have them in the corners but they'll have you in the straights. It's a give and take. 60MPH should be plenty of speed... never been a problem for anyone I've rode with. I'm usually passing sleds on the side of the trail.

I hardly use it. going fast in a straight line sucks! If they make fun of you for being slow, challenge them to a tree ride!

I bet this is true up the south fork...

At least to Lost Johnny creek for sure.

I wouldn't worry about 6th gear, what I would worry about is the spacing on bikes that have 6 gears to start with. They typically have a wider spacing between gears, and that makes it tricky to grab a gear higher. I wish my bike had the close ratio transmission.

I found that through gearing the kit really low I was able to use 4th for most hills. My top speed in 6th wasn't much higher than any MXer with a 5speed box.

I've changed my gearing now, and haven't had a variety of conditions to say if I've made the right move or not.

I'm on a 500 XC-W

What gearing are you running, i was thinking of doing that very thing for that very reason on that very bike.

6th gear

This year changed out my trans 2004 exc525 ,i put the mxc trans in it first gear is way more useable then the rest of the gears are all close together ending with 6th being a go home gear with out screaming the bike all the time .but still wish I had a little more top end

My low gearing was, 14-17-17-20. Now I've changed out the final two so I'm at 14-17-20-17. the low worked pretty good, but I needed taller gearing with my latest mod.
