6.7L Cummins, what do you think of them?

I just picked up an '11 and wondering what everybody has done to theirs. I really don't plan on modding it, but hear alot about doing the DPF deletes. I really don't want any more power and will only be used for light towing for 90% of the time.

DPF delete isn't necessarily for power only, it's also helps out with the fuel economy. Personally myself i prefer the good old 5.9l but i've been in a 2010 6.7 and it's got some balls. If i was you i would do the basics, cold air intake, exhaust, and a programmer. That's all you need.

my neighbor has one. he did an intake and exhaust with the dpf delete and has an h&s tuner on it. its a nice setup and he claims he gets around 16 in town and 23 on the highway. and I've ridden with him a lot and its pretty legit. but he is about the easiest on the throttle of anyone you'll meet and drives 70 on the highway max.

I drive a 07.5 6.7 and love it. I've always drove 5.9's, but couldnt pass up the deal on this 6.7. Just deleted with a smarty, 5" TBE, and intake. Made it a whole different pickup power-wise. Picked up 4mpg, best of 22.9 according to the lie-o-meter. (turning 35" toyo's too). I really like the engine platform, its just a matter of cleaning up the clutter if you know what i mean.

Head over to the Cummins forum and read up on them all day, lots of good info over there.

Personally, I had an 07 with the 6.7 and after doing all the delete's and programmer it was a runner and would get 20-22mpg running down the Interstate at 80 or cruising the highway at 70. Pulling my 6 place enclosed it would get about 12 and power wasn't an issue. Prior to the delete's, it was a POS!! In the dealers shop more than it was at my place, mainly for emissions problems, took all that crap off at about 10k miles and drove for about 100k afterwards without an issue.

My '11, different story.... crap for mileage and the power isn't near what my 07 had, exact same mods. But... I don't have a DPF to plug up anymore and no EGR to pour that soot back into the motor, so hopefully there's some good coming from it. I've heard from guys running stock 6.7's that they've really cleaned up the tuning and that helps with the DPF and turbo issues, but you still need to drive them like a "truck" and not a grocery getter or you'll constantly be in Regen mode and that's a mileage killer big time.

Just a guestion, if you don't pull much and with the huge difference from diesel to gas at the pump, maintenence and price tag, what was the main reason for going with the Cummins?

I will be pulling a trailer almost all of the time it is driven, it's just light trailers for a diesel. My 4 place enclosed and my Malibu are probably 6,000 lbs at most. I didn't like the shifting and redline running 75-80 pulling the trailers with my 1/2 ton hemi.

DPF

Piece of s@#t. I did an H&S EGR/cooler delete, AFE stage 2 cold air intake w/ dry filter, 4" AFE turbo back kit w/ straight through muffler and a superchip programmer. Best thing I could have ever done. Great fuel mileage, I can let it idle all day and it hasn't been in limp mode or had a check engine light on since installing the parts. Before doing these mods I was ready to burn the thing! EGR codes and particulate filter plugged warnings steady. Horrible mileage. Its all good now.

Too bad one has to spend that kind of money after already shelling out big bucks for the truck not to mention voiding warranty.

As far as warranty is concerned, they can only deny warranty if the modification causes the failure. Obviously motor and tranny problems can be sticky to get covered.

Warranty

Basically you're on your own as far as warranty. I sell parts at a Chrysler dealership. We look after our customers, but if we can't get paid for it, you're not getting it covered under warranty! You are right though, if you don't abuse it, and you have probs chances are its something we can cover.

Don't you have to pass emissions testing in the Springs? I've also been told that it is a $5,000 fine if you remove your DPF. Not sure if a dealer would "report" you.

Warranty is a "grey" area when it comes to mods and some dealers will look the other way if it's in within reason and some will use the programmer as an excuse to deny warranty on everything. I took mine in to get the wiring looked at on the trailer plug in, I pulled up to the front door, walked inside and by the time I turned around to point it out to the service manager there were 4 guys out there looking under the hood. I walked out and said "the trailer plug in is at the back of the truck.." one guy said "it's probably got something to do with this box mounted on the fuse box", which is the Pyro connector for my EGT gauge and that's just the spot I chose to mount it and it in no way had any relationship to anything else. The service manager looked at the exhaust and said "you know you voided your warranty by doing that right?".

Wow now that's a dickhead dealership. I was the diesel tech at our dodge store for 12 years and 99% I looked the other way with mods unless it was blatant abuse. Besides how can I crucify someone when I do the same thing, my smarty and delete pipes will be on the way after xmas. They should be thanking you for eliminating the crap that causes the problems.

To skibreeze sweet truck I have a 10 mega and love it. Only thing I miss from my old one is the long bed, still workin on the wife to let me do a longbed conversion though. For the most part they seem to have got the bugs worked out compared to the first run of 6.7s. Although deletes would definately make for a healthier truck. Liked stated earlier check out cumminsforum, tons of good reading.
