6.4 Ford thinking what are your thoughts

The 6.4 is headed out the door pretty soon from various rumors and things I have read about the new ford diesel. I have a 2000 F250 7.3L and I would love to have a new truck but I cant trust the reliability of any of the new 3 motors. My 7.3 is reliable as hell, and my fathers has 490K on his 2K F350 dually and still runs just fine. But if I were to et a new truck it would be a 6.7L cummins.

bad mileage

I have a 6.0 with 35's my brother has a dmax stock tires and his father in law a 6.4 stock tires. we took a trip this summer rv,ing. 6.0 ford got 9mpg dmax 11 and 6.4 ....5. He was pulling a slightly larger load but not substantial.

Don't even get me started on all this dyno talk, I have a friend with a 5.9 cummins that has head work, twin tubos, injectors, fuel system, you name it, all set up by a reputable local shop that only does 580rwhp.

Currently I have an f350 w/ 6.4, f250 w/ 6.4 & 06 f350 w/6.0l. I have had 3 other 6.0l and 4 7.3l and 2 duramax's, the new 08's are by far the nicest trucks I have ever driven overall as long as you don't get too far from the fuel pump. My f350 averages 10-11 empty and 7-9 loaded w/ a 4 place enclosed trailer, I had the truck reflashed last week and made a trip out sledding this weekend after the flash and experienced absolutely no change in mileage the truck has approx 60k on it. I have to admit that I am getting tired of spending as much as I do on fuel, not to mention having to refuel every two hours of driving from the fear of not making it to the next gas station. It is getting time for me to buy another truck for myself to drive but after having 12 fords in the last 7 years and being a die hard ford fan I have been looking at everything else that is out there for my next truck. I just think that a diesel pu should get more than 9-10 mpg. Afterall my 02 7.3 averaged 19-21. Ford is making a heluva nice truck now but you think they could get there act together on some mileage, if it wasn't for the mileage I would hands down be buying another 6.4.

I currently own a 6.0 powerstroke. Unloaded is around 16 @ 80mph and 4-place is around 13-11 @ 74. I have talked to many people that own the 6.4 and they all talk about the mileage. 13 max unloaded and down to 6 pulling. All the new trucks are getting horrible mileage due to the emmisions they have to past. Went last year with a buddys 07 duramax with a 4 place with 3 sleds and it was getting 7.5 mpg @ 70-75mph. Its absolutely terrible what the trucks are getting these days. I'm not very happy about my milage either.

I have a f350 with 6 inch lift and 35's getting 20mpg on the hwy. Running the spartan dpf delete with the 250hp tune.:D

I call BS, no way a 6.4 is getting 20mpg's with 35's, I don't care what tune u got.

Not too many stock trucks have the stock components to support an added 250 hp.

A 5.9 with a stick and a tuner with 35's is very hard pressed to get 20mpg's.

No way he's getting that milage with those tires. I find it funny when people tell you they get 24 mpg with there trucks. there just in denial and believe what there computer mpg is telling them. Mine gets 26 on the gauge but when I fill it up its calculated to around 16. Went to Minneapolis with a good friend who has a 05 duramax and was bragging that he gets 22. Hopped in the truck and got a shy under 18. I was impressed but laughed on the inside remembering him telling me that he gets 22. Its still better than my truck, but hey, atleast i'm honest.

Just my thoughts on it. I bought a 08 F450 I get around 12 unloaded and 9 to 10 loaded and in 4wheel drive. But what do you really think your going to get with a 12,000 pound truck?
Like I said just my thoughts but if I really wanted something to get 20 or 30 mpg I would buy a little car. But thinking it would have a hard time pulling my sled around.

Over 500 rwhp with exhaust/chip/intake. ;)

hmm i dunno about that, i have a 6.6 duramax with intake, edge juice with attitude, 5'' turbo back exhaust, big head banks wastegate, ppe boost controller, methanol injection, and a bd diesel performance tranny and im sitting around the 480-490hp mark

the edge w/ attitude isn't that powerful for duramaxes.. get a PPE or EFI live and you'll go over 500 for sure.

My 6.4 F350 sits on 37's and gets 18-20 highway(Right around 60mph) hand calculated....The 6.4 is doing me very well, getting ready to get Spartan!!!!

These Spartan tuned 6.4's are seriously good trucks.

Oh I'm on my mighty Chevy high horse that 'oh no ford can make that with just a tune/exhaust' well let me find you some links...

(if you look at those timeslips that guy Pahrump is running low 13's with stock gears and 38" tall tires (275 tune/intake/exhaust)

Sorry I can't find more but I don't have time. If you search around the diesel garage there are dozens of people running this spartan stuff getting 18-20 mpg and putting out over 500 RWHP with just tune/exhaust/intake. It's not heresay. I'm sorry all of you guys think yourselves to be experts on things you have very little or no experience with. Do some research next time before you start spurting out incorrect facts.

There are dozens of these graphs floating around from all sorts of different people but like I said I don't have time to find them all.

The new 6.7 is having the most problems of all the big 3, If you go to thedieselgarage.com and look in the 6.7 sections you'll see what i'm talking about

i raced a powerstroke with a ATS aftermarket turbo and tranny and some kind of tuner, cai, and exhaust and killed him by 5 lengths

oh and believe me ppe is next on my list. the edge is only 160+hp

Most of the folks with the spartan tuned 6.4 are getting at least 20mpg (check powerstroke.org). They all did the dpf delete though. My 6.4 is bone stock except for intake and exhaust. The best that I've seen is 15 highway empty and 10 loaded. Worst was just under 8 (bad headwind for nearly 200 miles). When the truck shows mpg its always within .5 of hand calculation, not bad. Banks is supposed to have a tuner within the week for the 6.4 with the dpf intact. They even pushed it through the CARB board. Their stuff is always expensive but at least it'll be something else on the market to help with the 6.4's crummy milage. I'd like to see some literature on it anyways. Banks also got a truck into the 8's without blowing any smoke. Pretty impressive.

Sorry guys the Spartan setup isn't working for everybody, I'am running the DPF delete, 210hp tune and AFE cai, my towing mpg hasn't changed 8-10, and I actually lost 3mpg empty. Spartan is working on a new revision that I'am hoping will help me. The power is great and I love the pickup but the mileage is pretty bad. I tried a Hypertech tuner it actually helped by empty mileage by 1-2mpg, but it didn't have near the power the Spartan has.

my brother has an 08 6.4 and he has a straight pipe afe stage 2 and i cant remember what chip and we get 9 mpg pulling a 48 foot toyhauler . and going down the interstate he gets 18 not pulling anything thats no lie either

lol that video cuts out right before the time is posted on the board. those time slips could be from anything he has no proof he ran in the low 13s. I call major BS an 8500 lb truck especially on 38s will run low 13s with just exhaust intake and tuner.
