6.0 Issue

I've got an '05 F-350 with the 6.0. Last weekend I was down in Sioux Falls and twice when leaving from stoplights the truck just layed down on me. Foot to the floor and nothing there. I'd let off, and bam, it'd come back. I thought maybe it was bad fuel. Filled it up again, and no problems. Well tonight I filled it up at the local station, and 20 miles down the road, the same thing. It's only done it when the engine was running lower RPM's. But it happened ten times in a matter of 30 miles. I have a hard time believing that I got bad diesel twice in three fill-ups when I never had it happen before. This truck has been flawless until this. Any ideas? And please no, 'well the 6.0 is a pile of sh!t.' That does me no good. Thanks for any helpful feedback.

Did you happen to look out the side mirror and see black smoke when it died?

When I had an EGR failure (clogged) a few years back, mine had the same symptoms. Dog at stop lights and lots of black smoke out the tail pipe.

when i usta have a 06 6.0 powerstroke i put an egr block off plate in it and it saved me lots of problems especially with loosing injectors

I didn't notice any black smoke, but everytime I've had it happen it's been dark. I'll have to take a peek at that today. I've still got warrenty on the engine. Just wanted to see if it was anything anyone has run across that might have an easy fix so I wouldn't have to pay the deductible on the warrenty. Thanks for the feedback, fellas.

Folger, do you have an EGT gauge? Regardless, next time this happens, watch the boost gauge, and if you have egt's watch them as well. If the vanes in the turbo get sticky, sometimes it will just smoke like hell, make zero boost, and in result, EGT's will spike up high. Just something to check into thats easy to diagnose. Mine did this worse with a tune in it.
What kind of oil do you run in it? How often do you change your fuel filters, etc.

It's bone stock. No EGT gauges. I did fuel filters right before Christmas. I've been running 15w-40 Rotella, but I switched over to the 5w-40 Rotella Synthetic on Saturday actually. And it was the first drive after the oil change that it started doing it so frequently, after about 30 miles. The oil level is right at max. Drove it to my parents and back on Sunday, which is about a five mile round trip and it didn't do it.

sounds like a sticky EGR valve or sticky turbo. either one of these items should set trouble codes in the PCM. Take it to a dealer to have the codes read;P0401-P0404 are egr codes and P0299 is a turbo code. The ford dealers scan tools have specialized tests to check the operation of the egr valve and theVGT turbo. Also use additives in the fuel, sometimes helps in keeping the egr valve and turbo vanes clean. Good Luck

More than likely it is the EGR valve sticking. Get it to the dealer, have them pull the codes. You don't want to run it to hard like this, otherwise you will be replacing head gaskets.

This was a common problem for the 6.0 (the EGR, and the sticky vanes on the turbo). When one of these stick, and people drive them hard, the head gaskets blow. Then your in for a chunk of money. I highly recommend (if you didn't still have a warranty) doing the ARP headstuds, and EGR delete. Then you will have a solid 6.0 (also do yourself a favor and get yourself an EGT gauge).

Its a touchy subject with some dealers, BUT some have no problem what so every doing studs, and possibly even an EGR delete when they have it apart for that job anyway. I just asked when it was diagnosed if it would be cool if i bought the stuff, and they said no problem, anything to prevent future potential problems they were glad to do. But it really all depends on the dealer, tech, service managers etc.

How do you cure the "sticky vanes" problem on the turbo?? And what kits are guys using for the EGR delete?? Installing ARP studs next week, maybe i should do a EGR delete while i am at it.
