6.0 Dies while going down road??

I was on my way down to Wolf Creek the other night. As i was driving through the middle of mo where, my engine just died. I had the cruz ste at 70 and then the engine just shut off. All of the electronics stayed on, the lights got a little it lighter but that was it. I just shifted into neutral and turned the ignition over. The truck started right up. I put into drive and just kept on cruising. Was really weird. Then the ABS light came on. I kept driving. Then when i got to the parking lot, i shut off the truck and went and got dinner. I came out and the truck started up and the light was off. Has any body ever had this happen to them? Or have any suggestions for me to check out..
Thanks

I had the exact same thing happen with a 06 6.0 last season. Doin 75ish w trailer, cruise set and then it just died! no warning, just dead. All electical stuff still worked cause we had movies on both screens in the cab:face-icon-small-coo. Did what you did, shift into nuetral, coasted to a stop then fired right up. Went the rest of the way and back, prob 550ish miles trouble free. Really weird to say the least

How do you guys like your 6.0's and what size trailer are you pulling????

Have an 05 CC SB and pull a 24 foot enclosed trailer daily. I like the truck. Tons of pulling power. Has had some issues though.

If you know a mechanic that has a good scan tool, I would bring there. Likely it stored a DTC.

Try searching competitiondiesel.com If you dont find something along the same lines, ask the boys on there. Probably has most knowledgeable 6.0 PSD guys of any forum im willing to bed. I found weeding out the whining and sniveling on the other sites was difficult when just looking for good info on the motor. Good luck man!

There is a TSB on this...it is the wire harness that runs along the drivers side valve cover rubbing on a bolt. Mine did this and got worse and worse.

Here's how to find it:

With the engine running, get on a step on the drivers side and find that wire harness...grab it and press it down along the entire length, you need to find which bolt it is rubbing on (mine was toward the rear) and duplicate the problem...Once I found it, I just taped it up, and then taped a 1/2" wide x 2" long piece of plastic where it was rubbing.

50k miles on it since the fix.

I've got a lot of great info on Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums for 6.0:

I had a full load o4 crew cab dually.Thought I would own it forever. At 81,000 km or 50,000 miles the engine was out twice, the cab off once, the ball joints replaced twice, once on warranty, the front hubs replaced twice, the transmission out for rear engine leaks.Multiple egr problems. This one quit like that 5 times on me and never showed a code.
I baby'ed this thing...warranty just over and the pan started to leak again sold it. I understand Ford and International are involved in some kind of a lawsuit over that motor. Why would Ford build a truck so that you can't work on the motor without dissasembling the thing. Just my experience.:face-icon-small-sho

When my truck had 6000 miles on it it did this pulling the trailer through Denver rush hour traffic !! Started back up but the abs light was on too. Took it to the dealer and they replaced the speed sensor. Hasn't missed a beat since >>>>.

my buddy's company truck did it too, they changed 2 sensors but also put black tape around the harness where it was rubbing through. charged the company just under a grand to do the work. 6 months later is when they discovered the black tape when it quit again while out of town and had to be towed to another dealership, wires had corroded where the coating had worn through and entire harness had to be changed. 5 grand.....wow.

Thanks a lot guys!! I have some good places to start looking. I will track down the wire harness tomorrow and see if i can find any signs of wear. If i do I am definatly going to try to get the dealership to warranty the harness. I don't want to deal with any corrosion.

I Pull a 4 place enclosed and a open two place. I really like my truck, even though i have had some issues with the EGR system and a couple other small issues. I am lucky though copared to what i hav heard from other people. As of now the engine is completly stock. I have 80,000 miles on it and will defiantly e putting a chip as well as some other goodies as soon as my warranty is up.

Only problem with the destroked kit is comming up with the huge coin. Find a good CR, build it up some because its out and on the floor. Then you either gotta build a 48re because they are garbage, or all the adaptors, converter and trans controller for the 5r100, but if you get into big power, it will not last either. Then the place to do the work, or pay for someone to do it. We could pretend you could get it done cheap, but thats a bit far from how it really works.
My 6.0 has new heads, studs, EGR delete, and a dozen or so custom tunes for the SCT, and it does everything i could ever ask it to, especially being "big". If the motor ever ends up with problems that might cost 10-15k to fix, well then ill start looking for a Cummins.
Good luck with your truck, let us know what ya find.

PS I've pulled my car in a 22' enclosed, the other car on a car hauler, and our diamond drill a bunch of times, weights ranging from 6-12k pounds. On 36-37" tires i was impressed overall. It towed like a champ untuned, and was really nice with a mild tow tune with good converter lockup, and the "engine brake" added to the tune. Never a problem... that has left me stranded lol.
