550 fan clutching

Need a little input, I bought my wife a 2009 550 fan a few years back. I have owned other Fan;s in the past, what I remember was a lot more power from the older sleds.

We ride from 3 to 6 thousand feet, when I pulled the clutch weights I found 10-60's installed and my main jets are 210's

Any recomendations on what we should be running ?

No input on the clutching.

We had a lady in our group with a 2005 550 RMK. On a club run I had to try and get her sled up a hill and was not impressed with the little power that it puts out. I had thought about buying one for my kids, but after that run I bought a 440 SKS liquid.

I'm not sure, but you might need to gear it down a bit then target the clutching.

The reason I bought this sled was a friend has a 2003 550, not sure how it was set up but it was a screaming machine with no Mods.

Bought this at the snow show new 2 years ago from a dealer I did not know, not his fault i did not understand how important set up is. If I ever buy another new one I will make sure I buy it from a dealer locally and well known.

How do you gear it down ?

Check your jetting chart in the manuals and adjust the mains to fit the altitude and temperature you ride in, that may spark it up a bit. To change gears, remove the exhaust system then the chaincase cover to expose the gears and chain. A smaller top gear/larger bottom gear will free up the engine and clutches a bit with a top speed sacrifice. Remember the fanner's power will drop off when rpm's increase past the peak, say 7,000rpm. You have a 65hp engine at best, maybe 30hp at altitude. To be ultimately happy you will have to limit your field of view to the 550's perspective.

550 Fan

We have an 02. I have a 136" track on it. We use 10-58's out west with the std sprockets which are 19:39. We usually ride quite a bit higher than you. Our clutching chart shows 10-60 for your altitude. did you get the owners supplement with the sled? You can download them on the Polaris site with Manuals.

You could easily pick up a 41T lower sprocket as many RMK's use them. The other item you could tweak would be the helix on the secondary. We use a 54-38.46ER. You could check with Team and get a recomendation to use a different angle to let the motor rev easier.

So many options and not difficult to implement, guess I will pull the cain case cover and see whats inside.

There are gearing charts available in the manuals, divide your bottom gear tooth count by your top gear tooth count for the ratio (x:1). There are lots of ratio options. Sooner or later different chain lengths may come into play - note the # of "links". Note too, when you've cussed yourself blue dealing with the perposterous stock exhaust cannister, send off few hundred bucks to SLP and get their Ultra Quiet cannister for a 09 800cfi engine and install it. The 09 550 and 800cfi engine shared exhaust cannisters. The SLP unit is almost 1/2 the size and weight, is just as quiet, and sheds heat way better (you can even access all the springs). I have over 4k miles on my 550 with the SLP can. Sorry I cannot help more, up here there is not much reason to get the fanner up above 3,000 ft so the stock set-up works well.

Our riding around here starts at 2500 ft, don't think I will get to crazy with this little girl as the wife has never complained, because if she did I would buy another new Pro,:face-icon-small-win guess I just want to use her machine to hone my own knowledge.

I have changed the main Jet, be changing the weights to 10 61.5 Per Pierres Polaris Recommendations, and looking at the gears in the chain case.

I will post in December how it all comes out.

Thanks for all your suggestions, Snowest is awesome.
