509 helmets vs AFX fx-17

So I wanted a flat black 509 but a riding buddy already bought one. So looking at the AFX-fx 17 on the advice that it was the same helmet I purchased a flat black one to have a different one than my buddy. I compared the two and they are the EXACT same shell. However that's where the similarities end. The Afx fit and finish around the goggle opening looks like crap with uneven edges and seams where the inner liner joins the outside. The afx has no breathbox, and the afx inner lining is wayyyy cheaper and not as well put together. There is also no insulation between your ears and the shell of the helmet. Talk about cold ears! Needless to say it's well worth the money to buy the 509. Just like their goggles the helmets Are top notch. I'll be returning the 2 afx's I ordered and get a 509. To each their own. I love my $74 AFX helmet. This its my second one. First one has been run 4 seasons and still going. HJC breath box and your good to go. Insulation or not by the ears, you won't notice the difference. Mountain riding I'm more concerned about getting the heat out than keeping it in.

Sweet post. I am currently debating these two helmets. But im gunna go with the afx. I don't need the added insulation. But i do need the the lower price. You will notice the afx helmets are also the same as HJC

They are probably good helmets both of them, have never tryed any of them. They seams to be a little on the heavy side both of them (3.22 lbs for the 509).
But in the end it all comes down to personal preference and priorities.
