500 twostroke vs 500+ fourstroke?

its my bike he is talking about. i dont think the vibs are any different then when i had the PJ carb. not sure why mine vibes so bad, ive just gotten used to it

OK so I have to get in here...lol

Summit boy!
I was going to build an AF500 last year until I got into the no fuel injection, and no where to put the big fuel tank on that particular bike.

I agree it would be the ultimate ripper, for short trips, full on blasting, airing out etc! I still want to build one.

I love CR500 power. I was also thinking of putting one of my old PSI 425 TRX 250R motors in a bike, the motor I used to run for ice racing.

There are many counterbalanced TRX 250R stroker motors out now that make big power, check out Eddie Sanders Racing. He also making his own billet cases. These motors are smooth! They would easily make the 85HP you are looking for in the 370-430 cc combo's with the modern port layout. Very little vibration.

I still consider doing one of those.
In the meantime I built the Husbery 570 motor stroked and bored to 660cc.
IT is around 85hp with the cam, and porting and on and on. I like the power. I would love to throw down, you and I, your CR 500 and me with my YETI on the 660. That would be a good go eh?

I would weigh in at 300lbs on the heavy BERG with the 129" YETI. Last year it weighed in at 325 lbs with my Titanium ST kit ( which cost me $9500 for the 20 lb savings).

Where you going to weigh in at on the CR500?

When i get my Yeti i would love to put them side by side ! That would be cool ! Never weighed it ! Where are you ?

These two 500's. Are they both steel frames ?

Thanks for all the input guys! Now I think I'm going to have to flip a coin! :becky:
Has anyone seen or rode with a CR500AF with a TS on it? Also are you 500 guys running a heavy flywheel or long rod kit? They made a huge difference on the bike I had. It was ported, piped and had a retarded amount of bottom end power. Also after porting it was a one/two kick start always.

No heavy flywheel or long rod for me... I wanted a sharp power band... More mx style..

I think I would do a KTM cro mo frame swap before ever thinking about an AF. The cro mo conversions are much better at dampening vibes and don't really weigh any more plus the welding is much simpler. For a 500 2T snow only application probably neither are worth the effort over a steely.

Here's my two cents.
Been riding 98 CR 500 for 4 years now. Took me until this year to solve carb ice, thanks to the AVID carb heater and thermostat. No more carb ice. I am also running a heat exchanger this year (no rad's) to control high temps.

I have not experienced any problems with bolts coming loose and the vibrations that everyone talks about do not bother me. I don't have norlock washers, and don't have any anti-vibration bars, etc.... Pretty much a stock bike setup.

I think that some of the vibration and bolts coming loose other have mentioned may be due to modifications they have made to the bike or there riding style:

No. 1, I did not powder coat my frame, just left it stock.
No. 2, Running a PWK carb (no smart carb)
No. 3, I think it depends on your riding style a little.

I probably lug my bike more than most, Yes I am wot at times, but don't feel I need it all of the time. The bike is a torque monster and if you need wot, then yeah I'm all in, but for me I don't have to ride it on the pipe to go where I want to go.

In the end I am happy now that I have the carb ice solved. I love the power delivery of the two stroke and for some reason i don't have the same problems others talk about on here with the 500. Plus the two stroke has a lighter feel on the front end for me

Both steel , his is 98 mine is 96 , both 1-1/8 bars . I have gen 1 fastway pegs his are stockers with extensions welded on . His has port work and the pulse , mine is stock stock stock . His pulls way harder cause of the pulse . Both running fmf fatty

There's a chance that I found a super clean 91 cr500 with inverted forks for this project. It has a pipe but not sure about porting yet. Does anyone know if that year came with these forks? And is this a ok year for the build? I know this year has a close Ratio tranny, not sure this will be best for the snow or not? I will use the stock chassis for the first year. Then hopefully insert the engine into a yz250f or ktm chassis, what ever I find first.

90+ all the same except forks and front wheel axle. No other differences. I believe 93 they went to the 46mm forks. Before that they were 43mm i believe. Id get the larger size forks or do a switch to 47 Honda or 48 ktm if it can be done cheap. If not 46mm work just fine. I run .54 springs in mine.

Motors are all the same in those years. Only porting i would even consider for these motors is Adam Millar from Millar Racing. You will get the best porting there is. If you can splurge for the TWIRP !

95 is the first year of the larger forks , the smaller forks suck bad

CR 500

I have a 1997 CR 500 ported by Adam Millar. I am also running a Pulse carb. I want to address the carb ice issue. Carb ice was a nightmare until I modified my airfilter. I am now using a large aftermarket air filter and have had zero carb issues. My theory is that the small air filter was causing such an air flow restriction that it lowered the freezing point of the small droplets of air/moisture going thru the carb. My ride last week near Denali Park was around 5 degrees when we left the truck. The bike ran flawless all day. And I don't use any kind of carb heat. :face-icon-small-hap

I didnt get to much ice last year. I had a huge pod. Bigger than my trubo Apex. Outerwares only. I did still get ice in my Smartcarb. Wasnt to bad but still had slide sticking. Running a Pulse now with a heater. No ice yet

ice issues are really hit and miss and seem to happen at any temp. really sucks to have a good day ruined and piss off the rest of your group while they wait for you
