3 week bike trip through Tetons and more...do you have?

My Dad and brothers and I are going to take a 3 week bike tour (see map) and am wondering from you Snowesters if you have some must stop at places along this route? We camp everynight so any reccomendations on great camp sites are appreciated to. Seems if you ask a local they will tell you the best out of the way must see or stop at places. If you know of a place to eat or site to see please let me know as we are not leaving for another month. Thanks!

***BTW, pay no attention to the purple line on the map that is a route my brother is coming in from Wa. The PINK is harder to see but that is the bike route***

We did this almost exact same trip last summer.

A week at Glacier N.P then down to Yellowstone via Beartooth Pass, south to Jackson Wy., then over to Stanley and McCall Idaho, then home.

At Glacier N.P. Avalanche C.G. is nice and Avalanche Lake is a nice hike. Going to the Sun Road, Highline trail and Many Glacier are all great areas for scenery and hiking. Stay at one of the lodges if you can get a room.

The road up to Beartooth Pass (10,900') and into Cooke City is well worth the extra drive going to Yellowstone.

Redfish Lake just south of McCall is an awesome place to camp, incredible views of the lake and Sawtooth range.

We had a fantastic time on our trip, I'm sure this will be a trip you won't forget!

take a right at missoula, go over lolo pass, riding the lochsa river highway would be awesome. go to grangeville and head south to mccall, awesome camp spots around here. that is if you are looking to change your route at all.

Whats your address? nice backyard? J/k:face-icon-small-win Good info you guys!

Take beartooth pass out of red lodge down through Cooke city, through Lamar valley, and then down into Jackson. It is an incredible drive! It is well worth the extra time.

Left at lolo headed for Lolo pass about 20 miles out of town look for the sign that says The Jack it is on the left side of the Hwy, one of the neatest bars in the country. If I remember right there is camping there also.
If you like History turn towards Wisdom MT. at Lost Trail Pass and go see the Big Hole Battle field, lots of great Native American history, It is where the U.S army caught up the the Nez Pearce indains and about did them in.

I would change things just slightly to cover a few amazing biking roads...

The road from McCall to Missoula up the Clearwater and Lochsa is AMAZING, as is Lolo Pass dropping into Missoula. The little circle north of Missoula is the National Bison Range, very cool. The road from Great Falls to Helena, the Recreation Road (NOT the interstate), is AMAZING. Best fishing on the planet right now and gorgeous afternoon storms. Just rode it last night. TONS of wildlife and amazing scenery here.

As others said, if you can do the Beartooth Highway from Red Lodge, MT to Cooke City it truly is the BEST ride in the U.S. It puts you on a moonscape-like planet with grizzly bears, moose, elk, wolves, it is CRAZY beautiful.... Try to catch sunset from the top of the pass and then drop into a campground for some ZZzzzz.

Amazing plan you have there, very cool because I drive all those roads all the time!!! We are also doing a big bike trip to the Tetons this July!!

Have fun, travel safe.

It was indeed The Jack for a while but has now changed back to The Lumber Jack. The signs have been changed also. The Lumber Jack turn off from Hwy12 is 16 miles up the creek from Lolo on Hwy93. They have cabins, camping, and often live bands on weekends.

Another vote for going over the Beartooth Pass from the Red Lodge side into Cooke.

Love that place!

Is the Beartooth pass open all yr. or is it closed in the winter?

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Shane Clause are playing at the Lumber Jack this weekend.

The Beartooth Pass is closed in the winter but I've rode from Cooke City to the top of the pass on sleds.

A buddy of mine from work left on a three week bike ride today. They are going thru Canada then Alaska then North to the ocean and back....long way to go and not much time to enjoy anything. I like your trip better, at least you would have time to see things and not be in such a hurry...:face-icon-small-hap

you are absolutely correct. We spend alot of time touring breweries/factories/light houses/ what ever POI are in the area. Heck there were days on our last trip we didnt make a 100 miles. It is a great way to tour. One of our best trips was the East coast up through Nova Scotia and PEI a couple years back. It is very important to have a laid back schedule so you can just enjoy the trip IMO. BTW,we toured the Alexander Keiths brewery last time and it was some pretty good chit...:)

Sounds like a great time at the Lumber Jack! Wish I could of attended. For sure would be hung over today! LOL.

Uhhh between Kalispel and Missoula----> skip the flathead valley and don't go through St. Ignatius. Take hwy 83. Go through the Swan valley to the east of that and go through Seeley Lake. Put in the river and float the Blackfoot (from Johnsrud Park to Bonner). That's where "A River Runs Through It" is written about.

The Lochsa is GREAT...you can't go wrong either way. You gotta take the Lost Trail Pass ride the way you have it marked. That means you drop down the Bitterroot @ Lolo and stay on 93 to Challis. Turn left after Challis and go up the Salmon rider to Stanley and Sun Valley down to Bellevue and then over through Craters of the Moon. Follow that to Arco and over to ID Falls. Good ride.

If you have a chance, go east between Hoback and Pinedale, WY. That's where the Gros Ventre range ends and the Wind Rivers start. It is stunning, more so than the Tetons in my opinion. Bonus time, head north toward New Fork Lake just before you get to Pinedale, that's where the Wind Rivers get really impressive and the lake fishing is unreal.

If you like breweries Missoula has a few of them but be sure to stop by Big Sky Brewery in Missoula. The are located out near the airport just off I-90 across from the Harley shop. Not only do they have good brew but they are also avid sledders.
