seller didn't mention changing the timing chain/belt. Is that a big problem?

Around here it would be a grand or so to replace. If it comes apart even worse. Typically done every 100,000 or so miles. $5,900 for a 290,000 mile 4runner seems high.

My wife drives a 240,000 mile landcruiser so I do like the toyotas. Check out ih8mud.com. It is a land cruiser forum but I believe their is a space for other toyotas and you should be able to find out a lot about goods and bads with the 2000 4runner.

I have a 2000 4Runner 5spd with w/86 000 miles on it. Only thing I've had to do to it is change a 4wd frt diff engagement switch which failed. Other than that oil changes regularily, timing belt, tensioners, water pump and accessory belts done at ~60K miles. An almost flawless machine & strong runner. Price on that seems high for mileage. May want to negotiate price abit, I'm sure he can't be too infexible with that many miles. Also check repair history & damage history. Proper timing belt changes at intervals is a must.
