250cc vs 450cc Test

We did a little snow bike testing with the help of a friend up in Canada with a 2012 KX 250 and a 2012 KX 450 (both are 4 strokes). We did a top speed and acceleration test in a field to try and get a true comparison and feel. They had some snow.<O:p</O:p
Both bikes had our new SX kit on them and had the same gearing set up. I do not have much experience with the 250’s so this has given us something to go off of.

<O:p</O:p250cc top speed 56 mph,<O:p</O:p
Accelerated fast through the bottom and mid range and lacked some on the top end. The 250 felt noticeably lighter than the 450 and feels very torque and quick at slower speeds. Felt like the motor had no problem turning the track. This is a very good bike for a kid or smaller rider weighing less than 130lbs. With this size of rider I think it will keep up just fine in the mountains with the 450. We had a kid there (Aston) that was riding them both as well. He was more into the 250. He said he could really toss it around like his bike felt on the dirt more so then the 450.

<O:p</O:p450cc top speed 64 mph,<O:p</O:p
Would hole shot the 250 by only a small amount (2 bike lengths at most by 4th gear) and pulled evenly all the way to top speed. It definitely feels larger simply due to the extra few pounds it has over the 250. I still recommend this for the average guy.<O:p</O:p

I was a skeptic of the 250’s and after doing these tests I am not at all anymore. "These 250 really do rip with the Mountain Horse Snow Bike kits on them."<O:p</O:p

Good post Allen. This makes me feel better about my 350. I've been really nervous about the power/torque, but if the 250 tested that well maybe I'll be fine.

Thanks for the information.

Alan, could you please be sure to post up more on this comparison once the snow gets deeper and more testing can be done on the mountain in typical snow conditions. Thanks.

Great test, great news for a lot of options. Lighter, smaller riders. Should be a great tight woods boondocker. Thanks

Allen, any plans for inventing a kit that makes a 230lb rider like myself a 140lb rider?

sounds good

test echo's same feed back I've had from several 250 riders and makes me feel better with a yz250 bike under construction. been thinking down the road about a little setup on a kdx200 I have sitting, might be good for my grandson.
